It\u2019s been an honor serving\u00a0as your Mayor over the\u00a0past three weeks, which I have spent taking clear and direct action to bring our unhoused neighbors inside.<\/p>\n

On my first day in office, I didn\u2019t start the morning at City Hall \u2013 I started at the City\u2019s Emergency Operations Center where, as my first official act, I declared a\u00a0State of Emergency on homelessness<\/strong><\/a>. Together with leaders from the City, the County, and the non-profit and private sectors, we committed to a comprehensive new strategy and set the stage for a sea change in how we address homelessness.<\/p>\n

Our new approach is urgent and proactive \u2013 and it must be. After all, more than 40,000 Angelenos are sleeping on the streets today, and five of them are dying there every day.<\/p>\n

To meet this emergency head-on, I also issued an\u00a0Executive Directive<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to remove barriers that slow\u00a0the work and increase the cost of building temporary and permanent housing. We\u2019re also making it easier for the City to acquire rooms, properties\u00a0and land to house Angelenos in need.<\/p>\n

I also issued an Executive Directive launching\u00a0Inside Safe<\/strong>,<\/a>\u00a0Los Angeles\u2019 citywide, proactive and housing-led strategy to bring people inside from tents and encampments, and to prevent encampments from returning.<\/p>\n

Through Inside Safe, we\u2019ll give people safe places to move immediately \u2013 and commit to providing them with services and permanent housing so they can stay inside for good.<\/p>\n

This is just the beginning \u2013 we will also fast-track the opening of HHH, additional interim housing\u00a0and other permanent homes,\u00a0and ensure we see results and efficiency from voter-approved Measure ULA.<\/p>\n
