{"id":55796,"date":"2023-01-07T04:20:48","date_gmt":"2023-01-07T12:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=55796"},"modified":"2023-01-09T11:22:32","modified_gmt":"2023-01-09T19:22:32","slug":"kevin-mccarthy-secures-speakership-after-historic-floor-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=55796","title":{"rendered":"Kevin McCarthy secures Speakership after historic floor battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)\u00a0became the 55th Speaker of the House\u00a0in the midnight hour on Saturday, ending a historic four-day, 15-ballot stalemate caused by a group of 20 hardline conservative members \u2014 and fulfilling the California Republican\u2019s longtime goal.<\/p>\n<p>The final vote, on the 15th ballot, was 216 for McCarthy, 212 for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and six present votes. With the present votes, he needed 215 votes to win.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy\u2019s securing of the Speakership came after a dramatic scene on the House floor on the 14th ballot, with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/3803334-mccarthy-fails-to-win-speakership-as-gaetz-casts-deciding-vote\/\">casting the deciding vote<\/a>\u00a0that put McCarthy just one vote shy of the gavel.<\/p>\n<p>Members huddled around Gaetz in intense discussion after the vote. At one point, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) went up to the group in anger, and Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) physically pulled Rogers back.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans were about to adjourn until Monday \u2014 until Gaetz approached McCarthy, who asked for one more vote. On that ballot,\u00a0all remaining holdouts flipped to vote present so he would win.<\/p>\n<p>It is a major victory for McCarthy.
