It represents a threat to the safety and well-being of every individual, whether directly targeted on not. Impacted communities are changed in a long-lasting way by hate crime and their sense of unity is often permanently shaken. The February 8th program presented a roundtable with participants from multiple levels of law enforcement engaging in a dynamic exchange about essential measures and the need for broad stakeholder collaboration to stem the spread of hate crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Roundtable experts were\u00a0Jim McDonnell, former LA County Sheriff, now Director of the Safe Communities Institute at USC\u2019s Price School of Public Policy;\u00a0Walt Allen,\u00a0former director of the California Youth Authority, currently running Rio Hondo Police Academy;\u00a0Denton Carlson,\u00a0Chief of Police, San Ramon;\u00a0Domingo Herraiz, Director of Programs, International Association of Chiefs of Police;\u00a0and\u00a0Brian T. Gilhooly,\u00a0Special Agent In Charge, FBI Criminal Investigations Division at the LA Field Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The increase in hate crimes can be partially attributed to the lack of accountability for those who commit them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lapost.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/20230208-ACT-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56445\" src=\"https:\/\/lapost.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/20230208-ACT-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1125\" height=\"657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lapost.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/20230208-ACT-3.jpg 1125w, https:\/\/lapost.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/20230208-ACT-3-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lapost.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/20230208-ACT-3-1024x598.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lapost.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/20230208-ACT-3-768x449.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lapost.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/20230208-ACT-3-520x304.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1125px) 100vw, 1125px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;If you tolerate it, you encourage it,\u201d said Chief Carlson, reflecting on the recent high-profile case in San Ramon. &#8220;If you don\u2019t take action to stop it, you encourage it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His department has worked hard to build communication and a relationship of trust with the citizens of San Ramon, many of whom are immigrants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Roundtable participants highlighted the changing landscape of policing across the United States and how the requirements for police officers have expanded to include many added responsibilities and expectations.
