But soon, you\u2019ll also need a REAL ID to fly to see your sweetheart who lives across the country,\u201d said DMV Director Steve Gordon. \u201cI\u2019m sure it warms your heart to know we\u2019ve made it easy to get a REAL ID. Just fill out the application online, upload your documents and you\u2019re on your way. You will have to pop into an office for a photo and a thumbprint, but we can heart-ly wait to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently extended the federal REAL ID enforcement date by two years to May 7, 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DMV is encouraging all Californians to consider getting a REAL ID driver\u2019s license or identification card now so they can board flights within the United States and access secure federal facilities in 2025. Not having a REAL ID or other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-y\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-y\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1676159221094000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1rkUVp3kTSA3DAdM5X6MhX\">federally approved document<\/a>\u00a0to get through airport security may cause you to get stranded at the airport and miss seeing your sweetheart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To apply for a REAL ID, Californians should visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-j\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-j\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1676159221094000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1k3GcFz3HyNxh3HaBBBu7U\">REALID.dmv.ca.gov<\/a>, fill out the online application and upload their documents. Customers must visit a DMV office and bring their uploaded documents to complete the application. Customers need to provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of identity* \u2013 One original or certified document (example: valid passport, birth certificate) *Legal name change document(s) is required if name on proof of identity is different from the name on the other documents (example: marriage certificate, adoption papers)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proofs of California residency \u2013 Two documents, paper copies (example: utility bill, bank statement)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Security number (exceptions may apply)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-t\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-t\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1676159221094000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2C4sK_6IgKi6aesZD-5kKg\">REALID.dmv.ca.gov<\/a>\u00a0for a complete list of acceptable documents and a link to the online application.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Historical REAL ID information:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total REAL ID cardholders as of February 1, 2023: 15,110,226<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total REAL ID cardholders as of January 1, 2023: 14,937,510<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total REAL ID cardholders as February 1, 2022: 12,517,245<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Online Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DMV has taken many steps to offer more digital services. Most DMV tasks do not require an office visit. The DMV encourages customers to use its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-i\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/email.dmvonline.ca.gov\/t\/y-l-nurdyg-ikirdlukud-i\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1676159221094000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0G7QASnyUIPHf11Sz9qZRx\">online services<\/a>\u00a0and other service channels to complete transactions, including eligible driver\u2019s license and vehicle registration renewals.
