{"id":56668,"date":"2023-02-23T15:19:54","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T23:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=56668"},"modified":"2023-02-23T15:19:54","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T23:19:54","slug":"assemblymember-mike-fong-introduces-student-centered-bill-package","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=56668","title":{"rendered":"Assemblymember Mike Fong Introduces Student-Centered Bill Package"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SACRAMENTO, CA\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Assemblymember Mike Fong (D \u2013 Alhambra) has introduced four bills to expand college opportunities and support student representation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AB 26 will exempt state taxes on up to $20,000 in student loan debt forgiven by the federal government.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AB 1540 will streamline the process for undocumented students to access state financial aid by incorporating the nonresident tuition exemption affidavit (the \u201cAB 540 affidavit\u201d) into the CA Dream Act Application.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AB 1541 will give student members of community college district boards an advisory vote.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AB 1542 will provide a student member of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges a grant to support the student\u2019s ability to carry out their responsibilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the new Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, I am proud of this package of bills that will expand college access, support students, and strengthen students\u2019 voices and empowerment,\u201d said Assemblymember Mike Fong (D-Alhambra), Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCalifornia has led the way in providing higher education opportunities for undocumented students, but our students continue to face challenges as they navigate the financial aid system.
