San Diego, CA (June 21, 2023)<\/strong> – The Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) summer workshop was held on June 11 \u2013 16, 2023 in San Diego at the Wyndham San Diego Bayside hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n

GEM workshop is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to coordinate research on geospace research, including the Earth\u2019s ionized space environment and the impact of the solar activities to the Earth\u2019s space system.\u00a0 The purpose of the GEM program is to support basic research into the dynamical and structural properties of geospace, leading to the construction of a global geospace model with predictive capability. This year, over 300 attendees joined GEM in San Diego from about 20 states across United States as well as from Europe and Asia (e.g. Japan, Korean, and China).<\/span><\/p>\n

The GEM workshop has a long history of providing financial aid to student participants. Student representatives organized the Student Day Forum on Sunday June 11, and students with research experiences gave tutorials on various topics.<\/span><\/p>\n

The GEM workshop developed a GEMMEE Mentoring program, which is by the GEM Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) subcommittee to encourage an intergenerational exchange of professional knowledge, expertise, skills, insights, and experiences with the goal of elevating the career of future GEM scientists.\u00a0Under the GEMEE program, mentees can grow their professional network, learn to navigate professional challenges, and build their career path, while mentors can develop effective communication skills, connect with early-career scientists, advance their leadership skills, and gain a broader understanding of their field.<\/span><\/p>\n

The GEM Student Representatives host the GEM Student Poster Competition for this meeting. The competition is designed to be feedback oriented, with students being judged over various areas of poster making and oral presentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
