{"id":58797,"date":"2023-07-13T11:03:07","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T18:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=58797"},"modified":"2023-07-13T11:03:07","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T18:03:07","slug":"assemblymember-mike-fong-secures-nearly-11-million-to-expand-language-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=58797","title":{"rendered":"Assemblymember Mike Fong Secures Nearly $11 Million To Expand Language Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SACRAMENTO, CA \uff08July 13, 2023)<\/strong>\u2013<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Assemblymember Mike Fong (D \u2013 Alhambra) announced today that he secured $10.8 million in the 2023-2024 state budget for crucial language access initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIn a state as diverse as California, we must ensure residents have access to important information in languages they understand, especially when it comes to court proceedings or gun violence prevention,\u201d said Assemblymember Mike Fong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Funds secured in the budget include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">$6.8 million to increase the number of court interpreters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">$4 million to educate the public and law enforcement personnel on protective orders, such as gun violence restraining orders, also known as red flag laws, in at least 10 of the most commonly spoken languages other than English.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The request to increase the number of court interpreters is based on AB 432, authored by Assemblymember Mike Fong, to establish a Court Interpreter Workforce Pilot Program.\u00a0 The funds will pay for costs of training, coursework and exam fees for participants, who will be employed by a court upon successful completion of the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In response to the tragic mass shooting in Monterey Park earlier this year, Assemblymember Fong secured funds to raise public awareness of red flag laws, in order to increase the removal of weapons from people at risk of hurting themselves or others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Governor Newsom signed the budget bills on Monday, July 10<sup>th<\/sup>, completing the final step in the state budget process for the 2023-24 fiscal year.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SACRAMENTO, CA \uff08July 13, 2023)\u2013\u00a0Assemblymember Mike&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-58797","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ca-local"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58797","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=58797"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58797\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":58798,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58797\/revisions\/58798"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=58797"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=58797"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=58797"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
