The\u00a0text of the following joint statement was released by the Governments of the United States and Indonesia\u00a0on the occasion of\u00a0the second U.S.-Indonesia Strategic Dialogue.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Secretary Antony J. Blinken and\u00a0Minister Retno L.P.\u00a0Marsudi\u00a0adopted this Joint Statement\u00a0on the occasion of\u00a0the\u00a0U.S.-Indonesia- Ministerial Strategic Dialogue held in Jakarta, Indonesia,\u00a0on July\u00a014,\u00a02023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both\u00a0Secretary Blinken and\u00a0Minister Retno\u00a0recognize\u00a0that bilateral ties have grown stronger since\u00a0the United\u00a0States\u00a0and\u00a0Indonesia established diplomatic relations\u00a0on December\u00a029,\u00a01949. These relations continue to strengthen based on shared values and principles of democracy, good governance,\u00a0growing defense cooperation,\u00a0respect for human rights and the rule of law,\u00a0as well as common interests\u00a0globally and regionally, including\u00a0an inclusive,\u00a0open, and rules-based\u00a0Indo-Pacific\u00a0that\u00a0promotes\u00a0peace, stability,\u00a0and\u00a0prosperity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The two countries elevated their partnership from a comprehensive partnership\u00a0established in\u00a02010 to a strategic\u00a0partnership\u00a0in\u00a02015 to address evolving challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities based on mutual benefit and respect for each other\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the 2023\u00a0U.S.-Indonesia\u00a0Ministerial\u00a0Strategic Dialogue,\u00a0Secretary Blinken and\u00a0Minister Retno discussed progress\u00a0in the\u00a0bilateral\u00a0relationship.\u00a0In terms of political cooperation, both sides exchanged views on innovative means to elevate\u00a0bilateral relations\u00a0and\u00a0build institutional connections. The two\u00a0leaders\u00a0focused on\u00a0boosting\u00a0economic cooperation,\u00a0strengthening\u00a0supply chains,\u00a0advancing\u00a0energy transition, and\u00a0furthering maritime, health, and defense cooperation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secretary Blinken and\u00a0Minister Retno\u00a0also\u00a0addressed regional and multilateral issues of common concern and interest, including Indonesia\u2019s ASEAN Chairmanship\u00a0and the U.S. support for the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP),\u00a0the United States\u2019 APEC host year,\u00a0Myanmar,\u00a0and Afghanistan.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In acknowledgement of\u00a0the 75th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of\u00a0U.S.-Indonesia Diplomatic Relations\u00a0in 2024, both\u00a0the United States and\u00a0Indonesia will explore the possibility of\u00a0further\u00a0expanding\u00a0the partnership.<\/span><\/p>\n

Secretary Blinken and\u00a0Minister Retno\u00a0welcomed\u00a0the\u00a0arrangements\u00a0that have been signed\u00a0this year that\u00a0advance\u00a0bilateral relations, namely:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Agreement on Consular Privileges and Immunities<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Framework Arrangement between\u00a0the United States Department of Defense and\u00a0the Ministry of\u00a0Defence\u00a0of the Republic of Indonesia on Research, Recovery, Identification, and Repatriation of the Remains of Department of Defense Personnel from World War II in the Regency of Morotai Islands of the Republic of Indonesia\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Finally,\u00a0Secretary Blinken and\u00a0Minister Retno appreciated the ongoing discussions to increase visa validity and stay permits for U.S. and Indonesian diplomats and official passport holders, respectively for five years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Secretary Blinken and Minister Retno are committed to pursuing\u00a0concrete steps as outlined in the dialogue and look forward to the next Strategic Dialogue.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
