Mark Warner, D-Virginia and co-chair of the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warner.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/cdf-caucus\"><u>Community Development Finance Caucus,<\/u><\/a>\u00a0joined a venture capitalist, a community leader, and a young entrepreneur July 14 to lay out the challenges and solutions for starting and growing small businesses in a post-Covid 19 environment.<\/p>\n<p>Over 33 million small businesses make up about 99.9% of businesses in the US, and employ almost half of its workforce. During the Covid-19 pandemic, 40% of Black and Latino-owned businesses shut down, many permanently.<\/p>\n<p>Community Development Finance Institutions \u2014 CDFIs \u2014 were one of the keys to recovery, said Warner. \u201cIn a strange bedfellows kind of moment, I partnered strongly with then-Secretary Steve Mnuchin of the Trump administration during the COVID-19 pandemic to try to get a lot of capital into our minority depository institutions,\u201d he said, at the news briefing organized by Ethnic Media Services. Warner and Mnuchin were able to distribute $12 billion in funding through CDFIs, Minority Depository Institutions \u2014 MDIs \u2014 and Tier 1 capital through a Treasury Department initiative known as the Emergency Capital Investment Program.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"widget2\" title=\"Helping Corporate America Honor Its Commitment to Fight Systemic Racism\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OFlQus9qpi8?feature=oembed\" width=\"100%\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-11=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>In the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, many corporations pledged to fight systemic racism. (EMS video by Nina Mohan)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAccess to capital is a hugely important issue,\u201d said Warner, noting that many minority entrepreneurs do not have relationships with banks to allow them to successfully apply for loans.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gelat\u2019OH!<\/h2>\n<p>Entrepreneur Sierra Georgia encountered this very issue as she tried to expand her small business, Gelat\u2019OH, based in Washington DC. \u201cLike a lot of small business owners like myself, this started with just a team of one and it\u2019s still not that much bigger than that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/sierra-georgia.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22505 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/sierra-georgia.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/sierra-georgia.jpeg 202w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/sierra-georgia-150x186.jpeg 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sierra Georgia, founder of Gelat\u2019OH! (Linkedin photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Like a lot of women of color who want to start a business, Georgia did not own a house she could mortgage to raise capital.\u00a0She got funding through a CDFI, but only received half of what she needed to expand her business. So she raised money through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesmbx.com\/\"><u>SMBX<\/u><\/a>, a small business bonds marketplace connecting small businesses to local investors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real bond offering. If you donate to somebody\u2019s GoFundMe you\u2019ll never see that money again, but if you buy a Gelat\u2019OH\u00a0bond, you get 11% back on your money in\u00a02 years. It\u2019s a way to bring wealth back to the community and empower small business owners,\u201d\u00a0said Georgia, who raised\u00a0$25K in four days via SMBX.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Empowering Black America<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAs President Calvin Coolidge said, \u2018the business of America is business,\u2019\u201d said Charles Phillips, co-founder of the Black Economic Alliance, who served on President Barack Obama\u2019s Economic Recovery Board.\u00a0\u201cThis is what generates a lot of wealth in our country and makes us different from other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of entrepreneurs who build businesses and build wealth and support their families. And they support their families that way and pass that down to their families. And so we laud entrepreneurs in this country as we should because it\u2019s one of our big differentiators.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CharlesPhillipsBio.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22506 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CharlesPhillipsBio.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CharlesPhillipsBio.png 730w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CharlesPhillipsBio-241x300.png 241w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CharlesPhillipsBio-150x187.png 150w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CharlesPhillipsBio-300x373.png 300w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CharlesPhillipsBio-696x866.png 696w\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Charles Phillips, founder of the Black Economic Alliance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut not everybody has access to actually building a business,\u201d said Phillips, citing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/public-sector\/our-insights\/building-supportive-ecosystems-for-black-owned-us-businesses\"><u>2020 survey<\/u><\/a>\u00a0by the management consulting firm McKinsey which\u00a0found most black families didn\u2019t know anyone who could lend them\u00a0$3,000 if they wanted to start a business.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips is involved with the Center for Black Entrepreneurship on the campus of the historically black colleges Morehouse and Spelman, to train young entrepreneurs to be good business people.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is, entrepreneurship is alive and well in the black community. \u201cIf you look at the last 5 years, it\u2019s been growing about 34% on average, the fastest growing sector of the economy for new business formation. But they need more capital and training and access to these relationships,\u201d said Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>Warner noted that one of the fastest-growing segments of entrepreneurship are businesses owned by Black women.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sexism Still Prevails<\/h2>\n<p>Shernaz Daver, Chief Marketing Officer at Khosla Ventures<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and a 35-year veteran of the tech industry, said the playing field is not level for women who want to start up and grow businesses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/shernaz-daver.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22507 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/shernaz-daver.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/shernaz-daver.jpeg 224w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/shernaz-daver-150x151.jpeg 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shernaz Daver, CMO, Khosla Ventures.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Daver relayed some of the experiences her acquaintances \u00a0shared with her as they were trying to raise funding. \u201c\u2019I went to fundraise and was not taken seriously because I was a sole woman founder until I found a male co-founder.\u2019 That probably resonates with a few of you,\u201d she told reporters, many of whom had founded their news outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to get venture funding and I was asked when I was going to have kids. No guy was ever asked that. I was told I was too aggressive in my financial projections, yet when my male partner presented it, he was seen as confident,\u201d Daver said, sharing the experiences of her acquaintances.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance of STEM Education<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI have been in the industry for over 35 years and I heard the same thing 35 years ago. So it\u2019s kind of bad. And if you\u2019re black or Hispanic, it gets worse,\u201d said Daver, noting that only 2% of VC dollars go into women-led founders. \u201cIt needs to change. Access to capital is key,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of women are starting up their own investment firms, focusing on funding businesses that support women\u2019s needs, said Daver. She noted that a lot of women-led startups are coming out of the biotech industry. \u201cIf you have the ability or the inclination to get into STEM or into biology, do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to believe the world is changing and we will continue to change it if we all do it as a community. And I think if we do that, we can have our own woman Steve Jobs or our own woman Jack Ma,\u201d said Daver.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LIFT Act<\/h2>\n<p>Warner also spoke about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warner.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2023\/7\/warner-colleagues-introduce-legislation-to-help-first-time-first-generation-homebuyers-narrow-the-wealth-gap\"><u>LIFT<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Act he had introduced a day earlier.
