The panel featured Maria Teresa Kumar, CEO of Voto Latino; Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, which he founded at age 17; and Arizona state Rep. Alma Hernandez, who has been involved in Democratic politics since she was 14. The panel was moderated by Paola Ramos, a correspondent for Vice and a contributor at Telemundo and MSNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Latinos are now the second largest voting bloc in the United States after non-Hispanic white voters. Latinos are also both the fastest growing and the youngest electorate. In 2022, 34.5 million Latinos were eligible to vote, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2022\/10\/12\/key-facts-about-hispanic-eligible-voters-in-2022\/\"><u>Pew Research Center<\/u><\/a>\u00a0study, up almost 5 million since 2018. An estimated 70% of Latinos who vote are registered Democrats. However, candidate engagement with the community is minimal.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018The Good Old Days of Newt Gingrich\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Panelists noted that narratives about the Latino vote swinging right to support former President Donald Trump are based on a deep campaign of misinformation, perpetuated through both social and mainstream media.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/M-TeresaKumar-Headshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24245 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/M-TeresaKumar-Headshot.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/M-TeresaKumar-Headshot.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/M-TeresaKumar-Headshot-150x150.jpg 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maria Teresa Kumar, CEO of Voto Latino.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kumar said candidates would have to take a stance on immigration, going back to their party\u2019s roots. \u201cThere was a time when the Republican party was vying for the Latino vote. And not so long ago in 2012, when Newt Gingrich \u2014 former Speaker of the House \u2014 was on that stage, he was talking about compassionate pathways to citizenship for people who had been in this country for at least 10 or 20 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Republican candidates today have failed miserably because instead they\u2019ve politicized workers, people that want to contribute, who are American: all but a social security number. And as a result, we have been polarized as a country in ways that we never thought possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what I would look for of individuals going on to that stage is some leadership and adulthood and speaking straight. Because it\u2019s very easy to demonize the most vulnerable and the most marginalized. But at the end of \u00a0the day, none of those folks that do that have a pathway to the White House, plain and simple,\u201d said Kumar.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Frat Boy Demographic<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cOur job as Latinos is to make sure that we are paying attention and holding people accountable because at the end of the day, we want the same protections every American has, including for our families,\u201d she added. \u201cThe person that wants to truly have a shot at the White House tomorrow night is going to have to be able to divorce themselves from the dangerous policies that are hurting people in Latino communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/santiago-mayer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24246 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/santiago-mayer.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/santiago-mayer.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/santiago-mayer-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/santiago-mayer-150x150.jpg 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mayer discussed the findings of a recent Voters of Tomorrow poll. \u201cYoung people care about the economy and jobs. This is number one, which is shocking for a lot of people, but it is really something that we feel in our day-to -day lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber two, abortion rights and access to reproductive care. Even some of the groups that you really wouldn\u2019t think care about abortion, like the frat boy demographic, for example, they are very concerned about this issue,\u201d said Mayer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe care about gun violence. We\u2019ve grown up with the threat of fearing in our own classrooms. We\u2019ve seen the climate deteriorate, and we are very concerned about the climate crisis,\u201d he said, adding that Latino youth are also concerned about LGBTQ rights even if they are not part of the queer community.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Worlds Exploding\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is young people, especially young Latinos just want to have normal lives. We don\u2019t want to be in crisis mode 24-7 with breaking news alerts going on every two hours. We just want to be able to sit down, and have a normal conversation without something in the world exploding and having to deal with it,\u201d said Mayer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandidates need to lean on that, especially the Republican candidates who keep in many ways sort of denying reality, especially with regards to like climate and gun violence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/alma-hernandez.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24247 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/alma-hernandez.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/alma-hernandez.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/alma-hernandez-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/alma-hernandez-150x225.jpg 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Arizona state Rep. Alma Hernandez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hernandez, the youngest-ever representative in the Arizona state Legislature, said she would like to see the candidates comprehensively address reproductive rights.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another Day Older and Deeper in Debt<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWomen\u2019s health is going to be on the ballot again. And I think it\u2019s really critical that these candidates tell us where they stand on this issue. If they\u2019re, if they think they\u2019re going to win by saying: \u2018we\u2019re going to continue to attack women and their reproductive rights,\u2019 well, I\u2019d love to see how that goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans blocked President Joe Biden\u2019s efforts for student loan debt forgiveness. And I would like to really hear what their plans are to help so many American students who have gone into so much debt to get educated. What is their plan to help them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tell people constantly: \u2018go to school, get an education, you\u2019ll get a good job\u2019, but what are Republicans\u2019 plans for those who have gone to school, but now are barely making enough to cover their loan payments?\u201d queried Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hearing that a recession is coming again. And I think that people around my age and people who have gone to school are really, really starting to get nervous and really want to know what, what are people going to do to help them?
