WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW<\/strong>: In late 2023, California distributed over\u00a0$267 million<\/strong>\u00a0to local law enforcement agencies across the state to combat organized retail crime. SACRAMENTO<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 After receiving California\u2019s\u00a0largest-ever single investment<\/a>\u00a0to combat organized retail crime, law enforcement agencies across the state report they\u2019ve already used the money to make an\u00a0initial<\/u>\u00a0900+ arrests<\/strong>\u00a0and will hire more police officers. The\u00a0$267 million<\/strong>\u00a0state investment \u2014 which is a signature part of\u00a0Governor Newsom\u2019s Real Public Safety Plan<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 was\u00a0distributed<\/a>\u00a0to 55 cities and counties in October 2023 to prevent crime, and increase arrests and prosecutions for organized retail crime.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

The Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) recently\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0the results of a survey it sent to all recipients of the Organized Retail Theft Prevention Grant and the Organized Retail Theft Vertical Prosecution Grant Program. The survey asked grantees to identify their planned activities and share highlights related to early progress in implementing the funding. Among reporting agencies, outcome highlights include:<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

\"\u2705\"\u00a0Nearly\u00a070%<\/strong>\u00a0of law enforcement agencies plan to \u2014 or have already hired \u2014 more staff with the state funds, including\u00a0more police<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\u2705\"\u00a075%<\/strong>\u00a0of grantees say they will use the state funds to\u00a0increase organized retail crime sting operations<\/strong>, establish crime centers, and increase police patrols.<\/p>\n

\"\u2705\"\u00a098%<\/strong>\u00a0of grantees plan on utilizing the funds to purchase\u00a0improved crime-fighting technology<\/strong>\u00a0to help boost the ability to surveil, track, and investigate criminal enterprises.<\/p>\n

\"\u2705\"\u00a0100%\u00a0<\/strong>of district attorney offices who received funds have begun focused efforts to establish an organized retail crime vertical prosecution unit to\u00a0increase prosecutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
