For the first time in America, five performances will run from April 11 to 14, 2024. The show, inspired by the writings of 20<sup>th<\/sup>-Century modernist author Virginia Woolf,\u00a0<em>Woolf Works<\/em>\u00a0sold-out crowds in London. This marks American Ballet Theatre\u2019s first full-length production by McGregor, featuring a luminous original score by Max Richter, performed live by Pacific Symphony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">McGregor\u2019s award-winning ballet triptych\u00a0<em>Woolf Works\u00a0<\/em>re-creates the emotions, themes, and fluid style of three of Virginia Woolf\u2019s novels:\u00a0<em>Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Waves.<\/em>\u00a0 With inspiration also enmeshed with elements from her letters, essays, and diaries,\u00a0<em>Woolf Works\u00a0<\/em>expresses the heart of an artistic life driven to discover a freer, uniquely modern realism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Considered one of the most important 20th-Century authors, Virginia Woolf in her writings searched for forms that defied the false order of traditional narrative conventions and enabled her to depict reality as she perceived it: heightened, startling and poignant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Created for The Royal Ballet in 2015,\u00a0<em>Woolf Works<\/em>\u00a0recreates the synesthetic collision of form and substance at play in Woolf\u2019s novels, while bringing to life Woolf\u2019s world of \u201cgranite and rainbow\u201d where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Renowned for his ground-breaking choreography and collaborations, McGregor mirrors Woolf\u2019s modernist reduction of neatly ordered narrative, in favor of heightened startling perspectives.\u00a0 He presents each of the three parts as distinct, multi-sensory collages \u2013 \u201cI now, I then,\u201d \u201cBecomings,\u201d and \u201cTuesday.\u201d For the final act, \u201cTuesday,\u201d Gillian Anderson recorded Virginia Woolf\u2019s haunting suicide note.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The unconventional structure and collision of ideas in\u00a0<em>Woolf Works<\/em>, in response to and reflective of Woolf\u2019s approach to writing, was curated by a sterling artistic team, including McGregor\u2019s long-time collaborators Lucy Carter (lighting), Moritz Junge (costumes) and Ravi Deepres (film designer).\u00a0They are joined by architects Cigu\u00eb (\u201cI now, I then\u201d) and We Not I (\u201cBecomings\u201d), and make-up designer Kabuki.\u00a0\u00a0At the start of the creation process, McGregor worked closely with dramaturg Uzma Hameed on analyzing and diving into Woolf\u2019s writings, finding a richness in Woolf\u2019s words and ideas that inspired the team to create the piece.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>Woolf Works<\/em>\u00a0is not a literal description of Woolf\u2019s writing, says McGregor.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s very lavish, with new visualization techniques and a collage structure; a full-on assault and collision of the senses.\u00a0 The idea was to choregraph and design the piece in the spirit of Woolf\u2019s writing, in an unfolding stream of consciousness, rather than as a literal translation of the novel\u2019s narratives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">McGregor\u00a0learned that Woolf herself had taken a genuine interest in dance. From 1911 she had regularly attended Diaghilev\u2019s Ballets Russes, seeing the promise of \u201call kinds of fresh possibilities\u201d in their exotic physicality.\u00a0 Woolf drew direct inspiration from the most experimental of the Diaghilev repertory, especially Bronislava Nijinska\u2019s fiercely constructivist ballet\u00a0<em>Les Noces<\/em>.\u00a0 McGregor says: \u201cYou can read in Woolf\u2019s diary the effect that\u00a0<em>Les Noces<\/em>\u00a0had on the way she\u00a0wrote, on the rhythm and organization of her material, on her ideas about kinetic momentum.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Woolf Works is produced in association with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.\u00a0 This production was first seen at the Royal Opera House, London on May 11, 2015.\u00a0 At its premiere,\u00a0<em>Woolf Works<\/em>\u00a0was met with outstanding critical acclaim, going on to win McGregor the Critics\u2019 Circle Award for Best Classical Choreography and the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0said on its 2015 premiere, \u201ca compelling trilogy of works that together form a resonant, layered meditation on time and memory \u2026 McGregor has thought big, and he has created a work that is entertaining, absorbing, not always easy, and occasionally contentious.
