SACRAMENTO\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>California today took another step in implementing the nation\u2019s most comprehensive measure to tackle the rise in plastic waste polluting our communities and ecosystems. Plastic waste is a major contributor to climate and trash pollution, with\u00a0less than 9% of plastic recycled\u00a0<\/strong>in California and the rest of the U.S.<\/p>\n

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the\u00a0Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act (SB 54)<\/a>\u00a0in 2022, which requires producers to cut single-use plastic waste and ensure the packaging on products they sell is recyclable or compostable. The state\u00a0today released<\/a>\u00a0draft regulations for the measure, kicking off the formal rulemaking process.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor too long, plastic polluters have passed the buck on the growing burden of plastic waste contaminating the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat,\u201d\u00a0said Governor Newsom<\/strong>. \u201cCalifornia is leading the way to hold producers responsible, drive sustainable innovation and green jobs, and support the most impacted communities.\u00a0We have to act now, with urgency,\u00a0to give our kids a future without plastic pollution.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
