SACRAMENTO\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 Governor Gavin Newsom today provided updated data from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) showing more people applying to join the nation\u2019s largest public-facing state law enforcement agency. In the last four months, CHP has received 7,615 applications, an increase from 2023 and 2022 which saw 5,803 applications and 3,732, respectively, in the same period.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Marking progress to fulfill the administration\u2019s multi-year campaign to recruit 1,000 new CHP officers from the state\u2019s diverse communities, more than 300 cadets have been sworn in as officers this year<\/span>. To accommodate the interest, the CHP is holding multiple Academy classes simultaneously for the first time in the Department\u2019s history, with three more classes completing training this year. The next CHP Academy graduation is scheduled for July 12, 2024.<\/p>\n

The CHP is the largest public-facing state law enforcement agency in the United States with over 6,500 sworn officers assigned across California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

HOW WE GOT HERE:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Following the launch of the\u00a0<\/span>CHP 1000 recruitment campaign<\/a>\u00a0and other recent recruitment efforts and hiring investments \u2014 including a new recruitment web series \u201cCadets<\/a>\u201d \u2014 CHP\u00a0reports\u00a0<\/a>that there have been an average of about 1,900 applicants a month since the start of the year.<\/p>\n

California has\u00a0<\/span>invested<\/a>\u00a0expanded resources and personnel since 2019 to fight crime, help local governments hire more police, and improve public safety. In 2023, as part of California\u2019s\u00a0Real Public Safety Plan<\/a>, the Governor announced the\u00a0largest-ever<\/a>\u00a0investment to combat organized retail crime in state history, an annual\u00a0310%<\/a>\u00a0increase in proactive operations targeting organized retail crime, and\u00a0special<\/a>\u00a0operations\u00a0<\/a>across<\/a>\u00a0the state to fight crime and improve public safety.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
