Complexions Contemporary Ballet |<\/strong>\u00a0September 20, 2024<\/p>\n

Hailed as \u201cgame changing\u201d by London\u2019s\u00a0The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0and a \u201cmatchless American dance company\u201d by the\u00a0Philadelphia Inquirer<\/em>, Complexions transcends dance tradition through a groundbreaking approach to the art. Founded in 1994 by Master Choreographer Dwight Rhoden and the legendary dancer Desmond Richardson, Complexions blends methods, styles and cultures by fusing classical and contemporary ballet, hip-hop, jazz, and modern techniques, resulting in a continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world \u2014 and all its cultures \u2014 as an interrelated whole.<\/p>\n

The company has performed at every major venue and many festivals throughout the United States and across the globe. For its 30th\u00a0Anniversary, Complexions will perform\u00a0FOR CRYING OUT LOUD,\u00a0<\/em>a brand-new work featuring the music of U2. In this raw and unfiltered piece choreographed by Dwight Rhoden, 16 dancers move as one to share the vibrancy of stories told by the music and lyrics from \u201cSongs of Surrender,\u201d U2\u2019s latest release. Globally celebrated as \u201cexhilarating and enchanting\u201d (The Guardian<\/em>), former Principal Dancer of the Ballet Nacional de Espa\u00f1a Sergio Bernal completed his first evening-length program in the U.S. at The Joyce Theater and continues to dazzle audiences worldwide.<\/p>\n

Created by Bernal and choreographer Ricardo Cue,\u00a0A Night with Sergio Berna<\/em>l melds the bravado and speed of Spanish flamenco with the grace and precision of ballet. Accompanied by three masterful musicians and fellow award-winning flamenco dancers, Bernal pushes both forms towards a new frontier.<\/p>\n

SoCal\u2019s favorite holiday tradition returns with American Ballet Theatre\u2019s critically acclaimed production of\u00a0The Nutcracker<\/em>. Created by one of today\u2019s most celebrated choreographers, Alexei Ratmansky, this dazzling holiday treat features ABT\u2019s roster of superstar dancers, gorgeous sets and costumes by Tony winner Richard Hudson, and Pacific Symphony playing Tchaikovsky\u2019s timeless score.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Nutcracker<\/em>\u00a0is the tale of a young girl, Clara, who receives the gift of a nutcracker doll at her family\u2019s Christmas party. In her dreams that night, the nutcracker doll comes to life as a handsome prince who joins her on a magical journey. Together, they travel to lands filled with dancing snowflakes, waltzing flowers, a mouse army, and other exotic characters, all brought to vivid life on stage by a cast of over 100 performers!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Martha Graham Dance Company |<\/strong>\u00a0January 18, 2025<\/p>\n

Known as one of the most influential forces of the 20th century, Martha Graham presented her first performance on April 18, 1926. Since that date, considered to be the launch of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Graham\u2019s groundbreaking and uniquely American style of dance has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences worldwide.<\/p>\n

To celebrate its Centennial, the Company is organizing an extensive series of programs and events exploring the diversity and depth of Graham\u2019s extraordinary artistic legacy. GRAHAM100 will feature performances, new productions, exhibitions, film screenings, and more activities that build on the Company\u2019s legacy of innovation and its present and future vision.<\/p>\n

GRAHAM100 continues in 2024\u201325, curated under the theme,\u00a0Dances of the Mind<\/em>, focusing on Graham\u2019s psychological works, multifaceted women characters, and longtime artistic partnership with renowned visual artist\u00a0Isamu Noguchi<\/strong>. Works to be presented\u2014including\u00a0Phaedra<\/em>\u00a0(1962),\u00a0Errand into the Maze\u00a0<\/em>(1947), and\u00a0Herodiade<\/em>\u00a0(1944)\u2014foreground Graham\u2019s command of complex ideas illustrated in movement and augmented with modernist sets and original scores. Graham\u2019s long and fruitful collaboration with Noguchi will be explored on stage and through audience engagement.<\/p>\n

Alonzo King LINES Ballet |<\/strong>\u00a0February 7, 2025<\/p>\n

LINES Ballet presents a reimagining of\u00a0The Collective Agreement,<\/em>\u00a0and 2013\u2019s\u00a0Concerto for Two Violins<\/em>. Originally commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet in 2018,\u00a0The Collective Agreement,<\/em>\u00a0Alonzo King\u2019s acclaimed collaboration with jazz pianist Jason Moran, takes on new life in a transformative re-envisioning by King, the LINES Ballet dancers, and light installation artist Jim Campbell.<\/p>\n

Their artistic alchemy will infuse the ballet with new resonance. \u201cWe are, as a community, trying to reach wholeness,\u201d King says. \u201cHow do we come together?\u201d The intimate duets and ensembles echo the rising tempo of composer Moran\u2019s original score, his first for a symphony orchestra and his eighth for LINES Ballet. The music was recorded live for this performance by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, with Moran on piano.<\/p>\n

In addition, King and the company will present a world premiere along with a reprise of 2013\u2019s\u00a0Concerto for Two Violins<\/em>, which turns the layers of fugue and counterpoint of Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s 1730 work into metaphors of human relationships.<\/p>\n

Twyla Tharp 60th\u00a0Anniversary |<\/strong>\u00a0February 15 & 16, 2025<\/p>\n

Showcasing Tharp\u2019s uncanny and witty use of music to create work of startling originality and beauty, the two dances once again ensure Tharp\u2019s place as one of the great artists of our time. Don\u2019t miss this groundbreaking evening of stellar dancing and phenomenal musicianship.<\/p>\n

The first and only choreographer to take on the intensely demanding and demonically complex \u201cDiabelli Variations,\u201d Tharp makes visible the elegant humor and depth of the composer\u2019s layered genius. With each section of the Beethoven piece, unique in mood and texture, Tharp\u2019s response\u2014tender, teasing, transcendent, cheeky\u2014commands all of its performers\u2019 technical prowess\u2014and energy\u2014as they change effortlessly from ballet to jazz, to modern, with unexpected bits of social and street dance for good measure.<\/p>\n

Almost two centuries later in years and spirit is Philip Glass\u2019s \u201cAguas da Amazonia,\u201d arranged and recorded by members of Third Coast Percussion in close collaboration with Tharp and performed on a unique collection of custom-designed percussion instruments.<\/p>\n

This groundbreaking evening is not one to be missed and is sure to dazzle audiences with its stellar dancing and phenomenal musicianship.<\/p>\n

American Ballet Theatre\u2019s A Winter\u2019s Tale |<\/strong>\u00a0April 3-6, 2025<\/p>\n

Shakespeare\u2019s great romance gets a magical reimagining through the power of dance with Christopher Wheeldon\u2019s\u00a0The Winter\u2019s Tale<\/em>. Widely considered a modern classic, the ballet follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret \u2013 and after a seemingly miraculous return to life \u2013 the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation.\u00a0The Winter’s Tale\u00a0<\/em>is an award-winning modern ballet classic, packed with emotional turmoil heightened by Joby Talbot\u2019s compelling score and Bob Crowley\u2019s atmospheric designs.<\/p>\n

Ballet Folklorico De Mexico |<\/strong>\u00a0March 22, 2025<\/p>\n

Founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hern\u00e1ndez, Ballet Folkl\u00f3rico de M\u00e9xico de Amalia Hern\u00e1ndez brings together the music, dance and costume of Mexican folklore from pre-Colombian civilizations to the modern era. The Ballet is permanently in residence at the iconic Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and has choreographed over 120 ballets, comprised of 60 folk dancers and musicians who continue to perform extensively across Mexico and abroad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Amalia Hern\u00e1ndez, the visionary, and pioneer revolutionized the concept of Mexican traditional dance and forever transformed its history. Hern\u00e1ndez devoted her time to the research of the folklore, music, costumes, and dance of the states that comprise Mexico, and uniquely brought them to life creating performances that are a true portrait of Mexico\u2019s beauty, diversity and rich history through music and dance. Her repertoire has become a classic – one that is renewed, transformed, and enriched with the passage of time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There is a reason\u00a0Swan Lake\u00a0<\/em>has remained the world\u2019s most beloved classical ballet for more than a century. It is an achingly beautiful fairytale told through unparalleled virtuosic choreography and Tchaikovsky\u2019s indelible score that has long surpassed the test of time. It tells the story of young Prince Siegfried who falls in love with Princess Odette. Odette and her companions transform into swans under the spell cast by evil sorcerer Baron von Rothbart. Their days are spent gracefully gliding on a lake only to return to their human form at night. The only thing that can break the spell is true love and Rothbart will do anything in his power to stop it.<\/p>\n
