SACRAMENTO \u2014 Ramping up efforts to crack down on crime in the East Bay, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced he will increase the deployment of California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers in Oakland and announced the recovery of 1,142\u00a0stolen cars, the seizure of 55\u00a0guns linked to crimes, and the arrests of 562\u00a0suspects since February.<\/p>\n

As part of this CHP\u2019s expanded operation, the Governor will quadruple the number of shifts officers conduct in Oakland and increase surge operations over the next four months in the city, providing a CHP presence in the city every day of the week. The operations, which will begin on Monday, will target organized crime, sideshows, carjackings, and other criminal activity seven days a week. How we got here<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today\u2019s announcement builds on\u00a0Governor Newsom\u2019s strategy to improve public safety in the East Bay and the surrounding area, including through an initial\u00a0CHP surge operation in February and ongoing increased enforcement<\/a>\u00a0focused on combating auto theft, cargo theft, retail crime, violent crime, and high-visibility traffic enforcement. Since February 2024, CHP has recovered 1,142 stolen vehicles, seized 55 crime-linked firearms, and arrested 562 suspects. This month\u2019s operation also led to the\u00a0arrest of a freeway road shooting suspect, who was identified through one of CHP\u2019s newly installed high-tech \u201cFlock\u201d cameras<\/a>\u00a0announced by Governor Newsom in April.<\/p>\n

Investing in Oakland<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Earlier this year, the Governor\u00a0released<\/a>\u00a0Caltrans\u2019 10-Point Action Plan in support of the city\u2019s efforts to improve street safety and beautification. The comprehensive plan outlines actionable steps the state is taking to further support the city through blight abatement efforts, homeless encampment resolutions, community outreach initiatives, employment opportunities, and other beautification and safety efforts. As part of the state\u2019s public safety investments in the region, in February, California offered the Alameda County District Attorney\u2019s Office resources from the California National Guard, including experienced prosecutors, for prosecution efforts to take down organized drug-related criminal enterprises. Yesterday, the Governor\u2019s Office\u00a0notified the Alameda County District Attorney\u2019s Office<\/a>\u00a0that the Cal Guard Attorneys would be redeployed to the California Attorney General\u2019s Office, where they will begin prosecuting the cases originating in Alameda County.\n<\/p>\n

Fighting crime<\/strong><\/h2>\n

California has\u00a0invested<\/a>\u00a0over $1.1 billion to fund resources and personnel to fight crime, help locals hire more police, and improve public safety since 2019. Earlier this year, Governor Newsom called for\u00a0new legislation<\/a>\u00a0to expand criminal penalties and bolster police and prosecutorial tools to combat theft and take down professional criminals who profit from smash and grabs, retail theft, and car burglaries. In 2023, as part of California\u2019s\u00a0Real Public Safety Plan<\/a>, the Governor announced the\u00a0largest-ever<\/a>\u00a0investment to combat organized retail crime in state history, an annual\u00a0310%<\/a>\u00a0increase in proactive operations targeting organized retail crime, and\u00a0special<\/a>\u00a0operations\u00a0<\/a>across<\/a>\u00a0the state to fight crime and improve public safety.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
