The founder of Toys \u201cR\u201d Us died Thursday as the company planned to liquidate its inventory and close all of its U.S. stores.<\/p>\n

Charles Lazarus died at 94 Thursday morning, according to a Toys \u201cR\u201d Us spokesman.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been many sad moments for Toys \u2018R\u2019 Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today\u2019s news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus,\u201d read a statement from the company.<\/p>\n

Lazarus had visited the company\u2019s New Jersey headquarters just last year, according to the statement.<\/p>\n

“There have been many sad moments for Toys “R” Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today’s news about the passing of our beloved founder,” Toys “R” Us said in a statement. “He visited us in New Jersey just last year, and we will forever be grateful for his positive energy, passion for the customer and love for children everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charles’ family and loved ones.”<\/p>\n

He started selling baby furniture in a store called Children’s Bargain Town in Washington, D.C. But he quickly expanded to selling toys.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
