{"id":6694,"date":"2018-03-25T09:57:06","date_gmt":"2018-03-25T16:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=6694"},"modified":"2018-03-25T09:57:06","modified_gmt":"2018-03-25T16:57:06","slug":"march-for-gun-control-takes-over-washington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=6694","title":{"rendered":"March for gun control takes over Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to flood the nation&#8217;s capital\u00a0on Saturday\u00a0for the \u201cMarch for Our Lives\u201d to support tougher gun controls and protest Congress&#8217;s refusal to consider them.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers received a National Park Service permit for 500,000 people, an audience to rival enormous demonstrations like the \u201cWomen\u2019s March\u201d staged in Washington the day after\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\" data-nid=\"261287\">President Trump<\/a><\/span>\u2019s inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., organized and inspired the event after a gunman killed 17 of their classmates and members of the school faculty on Valentine\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad-mosad_1-wrapper\" class=\"dfp-tag-wrapper wrapper\">\n<div id=\"dfp-ad-mosad_1\" class=\"dfp-tag-wrapper\">The killings re-energized the movement for gun control, creating activists out of young student survivors who have harnessed the power of social media to bring global attention to their cause.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe students have become victims of our government\u2019s glaring inaction, but never again,\u201d\u00a0Demitri Hoth, a senior at Stoneman Douglas, said\u00a0Friday\u00a0at the Capitol.\u00a0\u201cWe have come here today to hold accountable politicians and their disturbing inaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever again will our voices \u2014 students&#8217; voices \u2014 be shunned into silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The young advocates have a tough road ahead, facing fierce resistance from a Republican-led Congress and the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA), both of which have\u00a0resisted tougher gun laws\u00a0for years. While the Florida killings had prompted Trump to sound early calls for new gun limits, there was little appetite for such reforms among GOP\u00a0leaders on Capitol Hill. And Trump has since backed off his initial push for\u00a0significant restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s\u00a0march is designed to keep the movement&#8217;s momentum from petering out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think these students are going to take no for an answer,\u201d Sen.\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/amy-klobuchar\" data-nid=\"188271\">Amy Klobuchar<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(D-Minn.) said\u00a0Friday. \u201cThis march isn\u2019t the end, it\u2019s the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student protests have already had some immediate impact on the congressional debate. The $1.3 trillion omnibus that Trump signed into law on Friday includes efforts to bolster background checks before gun sales and empower federal researchers to study gun violence as a public health issue.<\/p>\n<p>But gun reformers in and out of Congress say it\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are baby steps,\u201d said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not even nibbling around the edges, what they did,\u201d said Rep.\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mike-thompson\" data-nid=\"189464\">Mike Thompson<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(D-Calif.), who heads the Democrats\u2019 gun-violence prevention task force. \u201cIt\u2019s something, but it\u2019s not a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young activists have been blunt in speaking of their disappointment, while accusing the adults who lead the country of cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents are stepping up to the NRA because our elected officials are afraid to,\u201d Antiqua Flint, a 15-year-old high school student from Minneapolis said\u00a0Friday\u00a0during a press briefing outside the Capitol. \u201cThe solution to violence is not more guns. We need to pass sensible laws to keep guns out of dangerous hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of gun control hope their march\u00a0on Saturday\u00a0will lend new force behind their cause.<\/p>\n<p>In a press conference this week, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the event is scheduled to take place on Pennsylvania Avenue in the Northwest part of the city between 3rd Street and 12th Street from noon to 3 p.m. It will end a few blocks shy of the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Pop stars Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Vic Mensa and Andra Day are all scheduled to take the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Broadway star Ben Platt and &#8220;Hamilton&#8221; creator Lin-Manuel Miranda are also expected to perform. The duo donated a portion of the proceeds from their new mashup song \u201cFound\/Tonight\u201d to the march.<\/p>\n<p>Other celebrities have also contributed. The Washington Post reported Oprah Winfrey and George and Amal Clooney each donated $500,000 to the march. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft flew Parkland survivors and victims\u2019 families to D.C. on the team\u2019s plane, The Boston Globe reported.<\/p>\n<p>Watts said that over 800 \u201csibling marches\u201d are planned around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/ted-deutch\" data-nid=\"186547\">Ted Deutch<\/a><\/span>, a Florida Democrat who represents Parkland, said the march \u201cwill remind people that universal background checks, that have the support of over 90 percent of the American people, need to have a vote on the floor of the House and Senate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the defining issue for them and their generation,\u201d he added, referring to the student protesters. \u201cThis is not a march that they\u2019re going to participate in and then go back to their regular lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Congress doesn\u2019t take action this year, organizers also hope their efforts will result in change at the ballot box \u2014 where gun rights supporters have seemed to have more muscle than those on the other side of the divide.<\/p>\n<p>Watts said\u00a0Saturday\u2019s\u00a0march marks the beginning of a months-long push leading up to the midterm elections to educate voters about where their lawmakers at the local, state and federal levels stand on gun control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis march is a way to get Americans off the sidelines,\u201d she said, \u201cbut it\u2019s now on them to join this army of volunteers, who are fighting in our state houses and corporate boardrooms, to change laws and policies.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of thousands of people are&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6694","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-u-s-a"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6694","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=6694"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6694\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6695,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6694\/revisions\/6695"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=6694"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=6694"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=6694"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
