{"id":69507,"date":"2024-12-31T16:19:08","date_gmt":"2025-01-01T00:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=69507"},"modified":"2024-12-31T16:19:08","modified_gmt":"2025-01-01T00:19:08","slug":"handyperson-exemption-to-increase-to-1000-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=69507","title":{"rendered":"Handyperson Exemption to Increase to $1,000 in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SACRAMENTO, CA\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 A new law will raise the threshold for work requiring a contractor\u2019s license from $500 to $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>Assembly Bill 2622 (<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB2622\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id%3D202320240AB2622&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1735776806793000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0xxCpCotv9r8E7M7tENmyo\">Carrillo, Chapter 240, Statutes of 2024)<\/a>, effective January 1, 2025, will allow an unlicensed person to complete small projects up to $1,000 without obtaining a contractor\u2019s \u00a0license if they do not hire workers and no building permits are needed. If a consumer\u2019s project under $1,000 requires workers or permits, a contractor\u2019s license in the appropriate license classification is required.<\/p>\n<p>The new law states that a person who is not licensed may advertise for construction work if the total contract price for labor, materials, and all other items on a project is less than $1,000.\u00a0\u00a0The $1,000 includes all costs associated with the project. The advertisement must state the person is not licensed.<\/p>\n<p>As with any home improvement construction project, CSLB cautions that a down payment should not exceed 10 percent of the contract price, and any subsequent payments should not exceed the value of the work completed or the materials delivered.<\/p>\n<p>If an unlicensed person provides a bid greater than $1,000, performs work requiring a permit, or employs any workers, that person is subject to legal action. Penalties for unlicensed contracting include administrative fines of up to $15,000, jail sentences of up to six months, and fines up to $5,000.
