Meyer, Ph.D., Williams Distinguished Senior Scholar of Public Policy at the Williams Institute and Professor Emeritus of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University, discusses efforts to ensure transgender prisoners are in jails that align with their gender identity, and how Trump\u2019s declaration on biological sex will impact them.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his January 20 inaugural address, Trump declared, \u201cAs of today, the official policy of the United States is that there are only two genders\u2014male and female.\u201d He later signed an executive order reinforcing this biological definition, claiming it was a measure to \u201cprotect women and ensure their safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/media-briefings\/two-genders-only-trumps-attack-on-transgender-people\/\">roundtable discussion<\/a>\u00a0held in response by Ethnic Media Services on Friday, January 31, Dr. Ilan H. Meyer of the Williams Institute warned, \u201cThis is not just a policy shift. It is outright violence. This executive order is not merely administrative\u2014it fundamentally denies our existence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Willow Evans of the Outsider Media Foundation criticized Trump\u2019s order, saying, \u201cThis goes against the Republican Party\u2019s core values of personal freedom.
