{"id":70864,"date":"2025-02-18T12:07:51","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T20:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=70864"},"modified":"2025-02-18T12:07:51","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T20:07:51","slug":"california-coastal-commission-awards-new-whale-tail-grants-amid-surge-in-popularity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=70864","title":{"rendered":"California Coastal Commission awards new Whale Tail grants amid surge in popularity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Surplus-Era Funding Highlights Growing Demand for Coastal Programs Serving Working Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"106\" data-end=\"345\"><strong data-start=\"106\" data-end=\"142\">SAN FRANCISCO, February 18, 2025<\/strong> \u2013<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The California Coastal Commission\u2019s Whale Tail Grant program, which enhances public education and access to the state\u2019s renowned coastline, has seen an unprecedented surge in demand in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"347\" data-end=\"637\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This February, the Coastal Commission approved <strong data-start=\"394\" data-end=\"430\">53 Whale Tail grant applications<\/strong> totaling <strong data-start=\"440\" data-end=\"456\">$1.7 million<\/strong>, awarding funds to <strong data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"555\">nonprofit organizations, schools, local governments, and tribal governments<\/strong> for programs focused on <strong data-start=\"580\" data-end=\"634\">coastal education, conservation, and public access<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"639\" data-end=\"1017\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThese Whale Tail grants embody California\u2019s deep-rooted love for the coast and our commitment to protecting it for future generations,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"825\">Coastal Commission Chair Justin Cummings<\/strong>. \u201cBy prioritizing inland and historically underserved communities, these grants reaffirm that the coast belongs to all of us\u2014<strong data-start=\"951\" data-end=\"1013\">regardless of race, zip code, age, orientation, or ability<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1411\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The number of annual Whale Tail grant recipients has <strong data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1093\">more than tripled<\/strong> in recent years, largely due to a <strong data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1180\">one-time $10 million state funding boost in 2021<\/strong>. Since then, the Coastal Commission has awarded <strong data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1255\">259 competitive grants<\/strong> totaling <strong data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1286\">over $9.2 million<\/strong>\u2014a significant increase from the <strong data-start=\"1319\" data-end=\"1356\">87 projects totaling $1.7 million<\/strong> funded in the four years leading up to the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1884\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This year\u2019s funding cycle saw a <strong data-start=\"1445\" data-end=\"1481\">record-breaking 299 applications<\/strong> requesting a total of <strong data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1521\">$11.3 million<\/strong>. Many were <strong data-start=\"1533\" data-end=\"1558\">first-time applicants<\/strong> proposing <strong data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1592\">innovative programs<\/strong> to engage communities historically excluded from coastal access and environmental education. The <strong data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1714\">53 projects selected<\/strong> this year will serve <strong data-start=\"1736\" data-end=\"1760\">every coastal county<\/strong> as well as inland communities in <strong data-start=\"1794\" data-end=\"1881\">Glenn, Madera, Plumas, Riverside, San Benito, Shasta, Siskiyou, and Tulare counties<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"2205\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThese funds ensure that future generations of Californians can develop a love for the coast and become its stewards,\u201d Cummings added. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful to everyone who has purchased a <strong data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2097\">Whale Tail License Plate<\/strong> and encourage California taxpayers to support the <strong data-start=\"2148\" data-end=\"2182\">Protect Our Coast &amp; Ocean Fund<\/strong> on their tax forms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2207\" data-end=\"2585\" data-is-last-node=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <strong data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2239\">Whale Tail Grant program<\/strong> was established in <strong data-start=\"2259\" data-end=\"2267\">1998<\/strong>, when the <strong data-start=\"2278\" data-end=\"2335\">Coastal Commission launched a specialty license plate<\/strong> to fund public education initiatives.
