SACRAMENTO, CA<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/b>The Contractors State License Board (CSLB), in partnership with the Tulare County District Attorney\u2019s Office, recently conducted an undercover sting in Visalia targeting unlicensed contractors.<\/p>\n
During the February 26 operation, eight individuals were cited after bidding on projects that required a state contractor\u2019s license with one unlicensed person submitting a bid \u00a0of $6,000 for landscaping. In California, a contractor\u2019s license is required for any construction project valued at more than $1,000, including labor and materials. Additionally, any project requiring workers or a permit requires a valid contractor\u2019s license, regardless of cost.<\/p>\n
Those cited now face potential legal consequences, including misdemeanor charges punishable by up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine. They may also be subject to administrative fines of up to $15,000. Repeat offenders could face harsher penalties, such as a mandatory 90-day jail sentence and fines of $5,000 or 20 percent of the contract price \u2014 whichever is greater.<\/p>\n
Some individuals may also face additional charges for illegally advertising construction services without a valid license. California law requires licensed contractors to display their license number on all business materials, including advertisements, vehicles, and business cards. Unlicensed individuals can only advertise for jobs valued at under $1,000 and must clearly disclose that they are not licensed.<\/p>\n
