green cards revoked over the holders\u2019 political views; agencies like the IRS are being pressured to expose immigrant applicants; and social media activity is scrutinized in naturalization cases, undocumented immigrants are far from the only people with their future at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Not only has the administration \u2014 issuing least seven immigration-related executive orders out of a total 26 on day one alone \u2014 cracking down on the border through deputizing military, federal, state and local law enforcement by declaring mass immigration a national emergency, \u201cthey\u2019re using antiquated war power to pick people out,\u201d said Zenobia Lai, executive director at<a href=\"https:\/\/houstonimmigration.org\/\">\u00a0Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative<\/a>, at a Friday, March 28 American Community Media briefing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"td-video-replacer\" data-id=\"undefined\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"3z1ZyPTnk4w\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"widget2\" title=\"Over Half of People Being Detained by ICE Have Absolutely No Criminal Record\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3z1ZyPTnk4w?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Zenobia Lai, Executive Director at Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative, shares information on immigration removals and who is being targeted.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She referred to the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, which Trump invoked in mid-March for the first time since World War II to deport hundreds of migrants to countries other than their own including El Salvador and Panama.<\/p>\n<p>While he targeted the Venezuelan Tren de Arangua gang, no evidence has been provided as to who was deported and whether they were gang members or criminals.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday, March 31, the administration said that it has deported 17 more \u201cviolent criminals\u201d from the Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gangs \u2014 citing murderers and rapists among them \u2014 to El Salvador\u2019s maximum-security prison.<\/p>\n<p>This is in continuation of an early February agreement U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made with the Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to jail deported U.S. criminals, regardless of nationality: \u201cthe most unprecedented, extraordinary, extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world,\u201d as Rubio later described it.<\/p>\n<p>Other tactics have included a day one executive order nullifying birthright citizenship, which Trump has since taken to the Supreme Court; rescinding the Biden-era \u201csensitive locations policy\u201d that had protected public areas like churches, schools, hospitals and funerals from immigration enforcement; and eroding safety nets through an executive order directing data sharing between states and federal agencies like the IRS, alongside mass federal layoffs and budget cuts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"td-video-replacer\" data-id=\"undefined\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"b2IRS8nJXf4\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"widget4\" title=\"Parole Authority Leads to \u2018Huge Reduction\u2019 in Unauthorized Border Crossings\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b2IRS8nJXf4?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Todd Schulte, President of FWD.us, explains how parole authority helps ease pressure on our immigration system and makes it easier for new immigrants to assimilate into American society.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey have not been just going after criminals, like the administration said \u2026 Immigrants are being used to test the rule of law,\u201d continued Lai. \u201cU.S. residents are being snatched off the street, and green cards revoked without due process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The past few weeks have seen at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/local\/everyone-detained-deported-trump-protest-crackdown\/6203251\/\">nine<\/a>\u00a0such incidents of visa holders detained by ICE \u2014 largely graduate students accused of being \u201cpro-Hamas,\u201d most famously Tufts graduate student Rumeysa Ozturk and Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe as a country, ask people to come in, and we are now stripping that status away,\u201d said Todd Schulte, president of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwd.us\/\">\u00a0FWD.us<\/a>. \u201cIn the next couple of years, we can be a country that not only keeps people in these statuses, but builds towards a permanent status, and if that\u2019s not going to happen, we shouldn\u2019t be throwing people into chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to guard very carefully when people say they\u2019re just going after certain sorts of people \u2026 whether they had contact with the criminal justice system, whether they are from a certain country, with this sort of criminalization is a trap that expands out from there,\u201d he continued, mentioning as an example the Trump administration\u2019s targeting of parole and TPS holders.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has revoked the work permits and deportation protections of 532,000 Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan under a Biden-era parole sponsorship known as CHNV, effective late April, 25 days after March 30.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a San Francisco District Judge ruling on Monday, March 31 blocked about 348,000 of the country\u2019s 600,000 Venezuelan TPS holders alone from deportation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"td-video-replacer\" data-id=\"undefined\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"TjkNcNDuPh8\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"widget6\" title=\"Trump Administration\u2019s Violation of Due Process for Immigrants Threatens All Americans\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TjkNcNDuPh8?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Martin Kim, Director of Immigration Advocacy at AAJC in DC, explains why it is important and in the interest of all Americans, regardless of their stance on immigration policy, to support the rights of immigrants to due process.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cParole authority has gone back seven decades. It\u2019s been used by every president of every party, and it\u2019s been a tremendous success,\u201d said Schulte, adding as example the 76,000 Afghanis who fled the Taliban takeover in 2021 and the over 280,000 Ukrainians who have fled the war with Russia since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople seeking refuge is not an invasion,\u201d he continued. \u201cLast November, the public was unhappy with what they saw as a chaotic border. Let\u2019s build a secure pathway to citizenship \u2026 because if you create a situation where immigrants don\u2019t have access to education, housing or basic health care, the chaos is a force multiplier for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the administration is willing to violate principles of due process, when it comes to immigrants, there is no reason. I have worked with people in totalitarian regimes, and the best protection is public honesty,\u201d Leopold continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u201dThere\u2019s a saying that I can\u2019t get out of my head since this all started, and it comes from Rabbi Hillel from the Middle Ages,\u201d he added: \u201c\u2018If I am not for myself, who will be for me, and if I\u2019m only for myself, what am I?
