In celebration of the rich traditions and artistic offerings of the AANHPI community, the Center invites guests of all ages to participate in a month of movement, theater, music, and meaningful connection.<\/p>\n<p>Kick off the month with some classical music at Pacific Symphony\u2019s<strong>\u00a0Shelley Conducts Beethoven\u2019s Fifth &amp; the Emperor Concerto\u00a0<\/strong>featuring the extraordinary pianist,<strong>\u00a0George Li<\/strong>, from May 1-3, 2025 in Ren\u00e9e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Next, join the electric rhythms of\u00a0<strong>Tuesday Night Dance: Indian Dance,<\/strong>\u00a0a series of free outdoor dance classes led by Apra Bhandari taking place every Tuesday in May from 6:30 \u2013 7:30 pm on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza.<\/p>\n<p>For a rejuvenating experience,\u00a0<strong>Root &amp; Rise: Mindful Mother\u2019s Day<\/strong>\u00a0on May 11, 2025 provides a peaceful morning on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza with gentle yoga, a sound bath, and Tai Chi at 10 am. Later that afternoon, dive into the rich world of Chinese mythology with\u00a0<strong>Legends \u2013 An Original Musical\u00a0<\/strong>at 4 pm in Segerstrom Hall. This production is directed by Jiangli Yu and produced<\/p>\n<p>by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, offering an immersive, family-friendly adventure through the heart of ancient legends.<\/p>\n<p>On May 24, 2025 join us for\u00a0<strong>Groove &amp; Gather: AANHPI Dance Fest<\/strong>, a vibrant outdoor festival celebrating the diverse dance styles of the AANHPI community on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza. From 12 pm \u2013 3 pm, enjoy exciting performances and workshops in K-pop, hula, Chinese dance, Indian dance, and more, led by expert instructors. This free, all-ages event invites you to dance along, experience new rhythms, and celebrate AANHPI communities through lively, interactive performances and activities.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, from June 3 -15, 2025 experience the breathtaking stage adaptation of\u00a0<em><strong>Life of Pi\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>that brings Yann Martel\u2019s beloved novel to life with mesmerizing puppetry, immersive storytelling, and dramatic visual effects. These outdoor community classes are FREE to attend with a Plaza Pass and designed for all ages and abilities. No dance experience required!<\/p>\n<p>Apra Bhandari, the director and owner of award winning Adaa Dance, founded the academy to share her love for dance, Indian culture, and fitness with the community. Trained in various styles of dance including Kathak (an Indian classical dance form), Apra loves to combine the fun beats of Bollywood with energetic movements to create the perfect cardio class that everyone can enjoy. The performances showcase modern and traditional artistic traditions from across Chinese history, from dance to martial arts to aerial acrobatics. Born from a mystical meatball, Nezha faces escalating conflicts with the Dragon King. When the Dragon King seeks to avenge his son&#8217;s death, he threatens to flood Nezha\u2019s village. Nezha protects the villagers by taking his own life. Feeling grateful, the villagers pray and due to the power of the prayers, Nezha is reborn from lotus roots. Experience Nezha\u2019s epic expedition through aerial acrobatics, gymnastics and music featuring solos on the handpan, harp, guzheng (Chinese harp), and pipa (Chinese lute).<\/p>\n<p>Mulan<br \/>\nMulan is a brave heroine with steadfast fortitude and deep devotion to her family. Due to a nationwide draft, Mulan disguises herself as a man to take her elderly father\u2019s place. In the army, she masters swordsmanship and strategy, leading her unit to victory in battles. Discover Mulan\u2019s daring odyssey through dance, powerful drumming of the Dagu (Chinese drum) and sounds from the yanqing (Chinese piano).<\/p>\n<p>Monkey King<br \/>\nThe Monkey King, also known as Sun Wukong, is a fearless warrior with a rebellious spirit. Born from a boulder, Wukong becomes the King of the Monkeys after leaping into a waterfall and discovering the Water Curtain Cave on the other side. Fearing death, Wukong trains with a Taoist master to achieve immortality. After training, he searches for a weapon worthy of his power. He travels to an underwater kingdom to find the Golden-banded staff, which he keeps hidden inside his ear.
