In celebration of the rich traditions and artistic offerings of the AANHPI community, the Center invites guests of all ages to participate in a month of movement, theater, music, and meaningful connection.<\/p>\n

Kick off the month with some classical music at Pacific Symphony\u2019s\u00a0Shelley Conducts Beethoven\u2019s Fifth & the Emperor Concerto\u00a0<\/strong>featuring the extraordinary pianist,\u00a0George Li<\/strong>, from May 1-3, 2025 in Ren\u00e9e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Next, join the electric rhythms of\u00a0Tuesday Night Dance: Indian Dance,<\/strong>\u00a0a series of free outdoor dance classes led by Apra Bhandari taking place every Tuesday in May from 6:30 \u2013 7:30 pm on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza.<\/p>\n

For a rejuvenating experience,\u00a0Root & Rise: Mindful Mother\u2019s Day<\/strong>\u00a0on May 11, 2025 provides a peaceful morning on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza with gentle yoga, a sound bath, and Tai Chi at 10 am. Later that afternoon, dive into the rich world of Chinese mythology with\u00a0Legends \u2013 An Original Musical\u00a0<\/strong>at 4 pm in Segerstrom Hall. This production is directed by Jiangli Yu and produced<\/p>\n

by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, offering an immersive, family-friendly adventure through the heart of ancient legends.<\/p>\n

On May 24, 2025 join us for\u00a0Groove & Gather: AANHPI Dance Fest<\/strong>, a vibrant outdoor festival celebrating the diverse dance styles of the AANHPI community on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza. From 12 pm \u2013 3 pm, enjoy exciting performances and workshops in K-pop, hula, Chinese dance, Indian dance, and more, led by expert instructors. This free, all-ages event invites you to dance along, experience new rhythms, and celebrate AANHPI communities through lively, interactive performances and activities.<\/p>\n

Lastly, from June 3 -15, 2025 experience the breathtaking stage adaptation of\u00a0Life of Pi\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>that brings Yann Martel\u2019s beloved novel to life with mesmerizing puppetry, immersive storytelling, and dramatic visual effects. Follow Pi\u2019s incredible journey of survival and self-discovery as he navigates the vast ocean with his unexpected companion, a Bengal tiger, in this extraordinary theatrical experience.<\/p>\n

Every Tuesday this May, join us on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza to learn Indian style of dance taught by Apra Bhandari. These outdoor community classes are FREE to attend with a Plaza Pass and designed for all ages and abilities. No dance experience required!<\/p>\n

Apra Bhandari, the director and owner of award winning Adaa Dance, founded the academy to share her love for dance, Indian culture, and fitness with the community. Trained in various styles of dance including Kathak (an Indian classical dance form), Apra loves to combine the fun beats of Bollywood with energetic movements to create the perfect cardio class that everyone can enjoy. Each class will also include one of the Center\u2019s Studio D instructors demonstrating adapted movements for those who participate seated.<\/p>\n

Tuesday Night Dance is part of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Month at the Center this May! From traditional performances to contemporary expressions, we’ll showcase the incredible diversity and artistry of AANHPI communities. Celebrate Mother\u2019s Day with a morning of pure relaxation & rejuvenation! Join us for a gentle yoga flow followed by a soothing sound bath and Tai Chi class! Whether you\u2019re a mom, honoring a mom, or simply looking for a peaceful way to start your day, this is the perfect gift to share with your loved ones!<\/p>\n

Yoga and sound bath will be led by local expert instructor, Darren from\u00a0RA Yoga\u00a0alongside Gina from\u00a0Studio D: Arts School for All Abilities! To ensure a comfortable and accessible experience for all, seniors and individuals with low mobility can follow along with Gina in a guided chair yoga adaptation! Tai Chi will be led by Dr. Miranda Lau from Natural Healing TCM.<\/p>\n

Darren Obong is a space holder and wellness curator who has extensive training in energy medicine, eastern medicine, yoga therapeutics, trauma-informed yoga, breathwork, meditation, functional movement, and mobility. He utilizes his knowledge from these different healing modalities and his<\/p>\n

knowledge from his education in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to help individuals live more embodied and fulfilling lives.<\/p>\n

Dr. Miranda Lau-Rivera was raised in the Traditional Medicine Culture (TCM) and grew up practicing Tai Chi and Qigong (Energy Therapy). She is a licensed acupuncturist and certified Tai Chi<\/p>\n

Master who has helped thousands of people become stronger and recover from illness through holistic health practices and guided self-healing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

An epic musical about loyalty, justice, and bravery, LEGENDS brings to life the timeless tales of\u00a0Nezha, Mulan, and the Monkey King through visually stunning performances and groundbreaking original music.<\/p>\n

Set to a dynamic score blending traditional Chinese instruments, Beijing opera, rock and roll, and classical music, LEGENDS features original music composed and conducted live by Bin He. The performances showcase modern and traditional artistic traditions from across Chinese history, from dance to martial arts to aerial acrobatics. LEGENDS is directed by\u00a0Jiangli\u00a0Yu and produced by South Coast Chinese Cultural Center.<\/p>\n

LEGENDS reimagines three Chinese classics: Experience\u00a0Nezha\u2019s\u00a0battle against the Dragon King to save his village. Follow Mulan\u2019s daring odyssey as she, disguised as a man, takes her father\u2019s place in the army. Delight in Sun\u00a0Wukong\u2019s\u00a0transformation from mischievous monkey into the powerful Monkey King. This performance will also include a special Mother\u2019s Day tribute to all mothers.<\/p>\n

Join us for an extraordinary journey into the heart of Chinese mythology, where heroes rise, destinies are forged, and legends are born!<\/p>\n

Nezha
\nNezha is a powerful deity and protector of the innocent. Born from a mystical meatball, Nezha faces escalating conflicts with the Dragon King. When the Dragon King seeks to avenge his son’s death, he threatens to flood Nezha\u2019s village. Nezha protects the villagers by taking his own life. Feeling grateful, the villagers pray and due to the power of the prayers, Nezha is reborn from lotus roots. Experience Nezha\u2019s epic expedition through aerial acrobatics, gymnastics and music featuring solos on the handpan, harp, guzheng (Chinese harp), and pipa (Chinese lute).<\/p>\n

Mulan
\nMulan is a brave heroine with steadfast fortitude and deep devotion to her family. Due to a nationwide draft, Mulan disguises herself as a man to take her elderly father\u2019s place. In the army, she masters swordsmanship and strategy, leading her unit to victory in battles. Discover Mulan\u2019s daring odyssey through dance, powerful drumming of the Dagu (Chinese drum) and sounds from the yanqing (Chinese piano).<\/p>\n

Monkey King
\nThe Monkey King, also known as Sun Wukong, is a fearless warrior with a rebellious spirit. Born from a boulder, Wukong becomes the King of the Monkeys after leaping into a waterfall and discovering the Water Curtain Cave on the other side. Fearing death, Wukong trains with a Taoist master to achieve immortality. After training, he searches for a weapon worthy of his power. He travels to an underwater kingdom to find the Golden-banded staff, which he keeps hidden inside his ear. Celebrate Wukong\u2019s saga and mischievous nature through wushu alongside melodies from the violin, erhu (Chinese violin), dizi (Chinese flute) and Beijing opera.<\/p>\n

\nThis is an outdoor event in an open plaza with limited built-in seating. Audience members may bring their own folding chairs if desired. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at George\u2019s Caf\u00e9. Attendees are welcome to bring their own refreshments, however outside alcohol, glass containers, tables, barbecues, and food preparation are not permitted on the Plaza.
