It is considered a cradle of Chinese civilization, home to legendary ancestors Fuxi and Nyuwa, and rich in cultural treasures such as the Mogao Caves, Giant Buddha Temple, and Jiayuguan Pass. Known for its diverse landscapes\u2014ranging from deserts to rainbow-colored cliffs to snow-capped mountains\u2014Gansu is also a symbol of China\u2019s ethnic unity, where 55 ethnic groups live side-by-side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1914\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ambassador Xie highlighted Gansu\u2019s journey from poverty to progress, calling it \u201ca story of resilience and self-reliance.\u201d Once one of China\u2019s poorest regions, Gansu has lifted more than 5.5 million people out of poverty in recent years. \u201cA barren land will never apply to Gansu again,\u201d he said, citing major advances in clean energy, digital infrastructure, and ecological farming.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1916\" data-end=\"1957\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Modern Silk Road of Global Exchange<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1959\" data-end=\"2223\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gansu\u2019s historical role as a key hub along the Silk Road was another focal point of the event. Ambassador Xie noted that the ancient trade route, stretching over 1,600 kilometers through the province, was once a global meeting point for goods, ideas, and cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2225\" data-end=\"2652\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That spirit of international cooperation continues today. Gansu has maintained a sister-state relationship with Oklahoma for over four decades and has engaged in long-term cultural conservation partnerships, such as the Dunhuang Academy\u2019s collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute. Cultural exports like the dance drama <em data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2579\">Silk Road, Flower Rain<\/em> have brought the stories of Gansu to audiences across the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2654\" data-end=\"2746\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen nations connect, they prosper,\u201d Xie remarked. \u201cWhen they close off, they fall behind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2748\" data-end=\"2792\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trade and Cooperation Over Confrontation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2794\" data-end=\"3070\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Touching on the broader China-U.S. economic relationship, Ambassador Xie underscored the mutual benefits of bilateral trade, pointing out that in 2022 alone, U.S.-owned companies generated over $400 billion more in sales revenue in China than Chinese companies did in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3342\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTariff hikes benefit no one,\u201d he warned. \u201cThey disrupt businesses, raise costs, and slow global growth.\u201d While affirming China\u2019s unwillingness to initiate a trade war, Xie emphasized that China will defend its interests and the international trade order when necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3344\" data-end=\"3451\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf the U.S. wants to talk, it should do so in the spirit of equality, respect, and reciprocity,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3453\" data-end=\"3505\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">China\u2019s Path Forward: Open, Inclusive, Resilient<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3507\" data-end=\"3857\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In closing, Ambassador Xie reaffirmed China\u2019s commitment to steady economic growth and openness. He cited recent economic data showing a 5.4% GDP increase in the first quarter of 2025 and a 6.9% rise in exports. With growing global partnerships, rising tourism, and surging consumer activity, he said, \u201cChina is stepping confidently into the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3859\" data-end=\"4209\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tourism to China is rebounding sharply, with foreign visits rising nearly 83% in 2024 and inbound tourism bookings up 173% during this year\u2019s May Day holiday.
