Solis of the First District and Chair and Supervisor Kathryn Barger of the Fifth District, proclaiming May 2025 as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. The motion recognizes the deep cultural heritage, intergenerational resilience, and lasting contributions of AAPI communities in Los Angeles County and across the United States.

Los Angeles County is home to the largest AAPI population of any county in the country, with nearly 1.5 million residents whose roots trace to East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Pacific Islands. Communities with Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Native Hawaiian, Fijian, Samoan, and Tongan heritage are central to the region’s identity.

The 2025 theme, “A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience,” honors generations of AAPI leaders, workers, organizers, and healers who have shaped more inclusive institutions while preserving cultural traditions. It acknowledges the determination of individuals and families who have helped build stronger, more vibrant communities across the county.

“Our AAPI communities have long been a source of strength and inspiration in Los Angeles County,” said Chair Pro Tem Hilda L. Solis. “From the historic enclaves of Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Historic Filipinotown, Thai Town, and the diverse immigrant neighborhoods of the San Gabriel Valley, our County’s landscape reflects stories of perseverance, pride, and progress. This motion ensures those stories are uplifted and celebrated.”

“Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have played an essential role in shaping the rich cultural fabric of our county,” said Chair Kathryn Barger. “I’m proud to co-author this motion and celebrate the lasting impact of AAPI voices in our communities. By honoring them this month, I hope younger generations feel inspired and continue developing a sense of cultural pride. That is priceless.”

The motion also highlights ongoing disparities and challenges faced by AAPI residents, particularly in health care access, language inclusion, and culturally responsive services. While AAPI residents make up roughly 15 percent of the County population, nearly 11 percent of households speak an Asian or Pacific Islander language at home. These include Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Hindi, and many others, reflecting the rich linguistic landscape of communities such as Monterey Park, Artesia, Cerritos, Carson, Torrance, Rowland Heights, and Hacienda Heights.

As the AAPI population continues to grow and age, the County is placing a greater focus on public health equity. The motion calls attention to health conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, which disproportionately affect some AAPI subgroups. These conditions often go undiagnosed or untreated due to cultural and structural barriers.

To help close these gaps, the County will launch a public health awareness campaign titled “Know Your Numbers.” The campaign will encourage residents to track key health indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, and to take preventive steps through nutrition, exercise, stress management, and regular medical checkups. Outreach will be tailored to reflect the cultural and linguistic needs of different communities.

Throughout May, the County will celebrate AAPI Heritage Month by sharing the stories of AAPI County employees, spotlighting programs that serve AAPI communities and promoting events that foster cultural pride and understanding.

The proclamation reaffirms Los Angeles County’s commitment to inclusion, visibility, and equity through actions and policies that honor the dignity and diversity of all residents.

[6

post-72575","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ca-local
["GET
