LOS ANGELES, LAPost (By Richard Ren)<\/strong> \u2014 At noon on May 7, the Los Angeles Police Department hosted a festive celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month at its downtown LAPD Headquarters Plaza. The event featured remarks from City Councilmember John Lee and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, and concluded with a powerful, high-energy performance by the all-Chinese girl group A2O MAY<\/strong>, personally launched by K-pop legend Lee Soo-man.<\/span><\/p>\n

The five-member group, composed entirely of young women of Chinese descent, delivered a dynamic stage show of vocals and dance that lit up the crowd of nearly 1,000 LAPD officers, staff, and guests, serving as a vivid example of the new generation of Chinese youth stepping into the global cultural spotlight.<\/span><\/p>\n

This marked the group\u2019s first performance in Los Angeles, following their official debut at the Committee of 100 gala in late April. Their set included two songs: the original track \u201cBOSS,\u201d<\/strong> blending electronic beats with traditional Asian sounds, and a reimagined version of the K-pop classic \u201cUnder My Skin (A2O)\u201d<\/strong> featuring new choreography. The performance, set against the open-air backdrop of LA\u2019s City Hall and accompanied by professional-grade audio, demonstrated global-level polish and stage presence.<\/span><\/p>\n

After their performance, A2O MAY sat down for interviews with both English- and Chinese-language media, where they opened up about their journey, mission, and dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe all come from different cities in China and the U.S., and it was our shared love for music that brought us together,\u201d said SHIJIE (\u674e\u8bd7\u6d01)<\/strong>. \u201cA2O stands for \u2018Alpha to Omega,\u2019 meaning from beginning to end\u2014we start in Asia but aim for the world. \u2018MAY\u2019 represents the month of our debut, the season of spring and renewal. It also sounds like \u2018mei\u2019 (\u7f8e), which means beauty in Chinese\u2014a beautiful beginning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The group consists of CHENYU(\u6731\u6668\u4e88)<\/strong>, SHIJIE(\u674e\u8bd7\u6d01)<\/strong>, and QUCHANG (\u66f2\u5531)<\/strong> from mainland China, along with Hawaiian-born Chinese-American twins MICHE (\u9648\u4f73\u4eea)<\/strong> and KAT(\u9648\u4f73\u8fb0)<\/strong>. All under the age of 20, the members currently share a large bedroom in Los Angeles as they prepare for their career. \u201cOur bond is really strong,\u201d said Miche with a laugh. \u201cWe sleep in shifts\u2014two go to bed first, three later. It\u2019s a cozy and special kind of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re probably the healthiest people in LA right now,\u201d joked CHENYU \u201cWe eat clean, go to bed on time, and dance every day\u2014but we really haven\u2019t had time to explore the city yet. We hope after the Wango Tango performance, we can finally try In-N-Out burgers!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The group was honored to perform for the LAPD\u2019s AAPI celebration. \u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity for cultural exchange,\u201d said SHIJIE. \u201cWe\u2019re proud to represent Chinese girl groups at such a meaningful event and to share our vision of blending traditional aesthetics with modern pop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

CHENYU recounted a touching moment: \u201cAfter the show, some audience members asked to take photos with us and wanted to learn how to say \u2018thank you\u2019 in Chinese. It made us so happy\u2014it\u2019s those little moments that make it all worth it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond their performances, A2O MAY carries a growing sense of purpose. \u201cWe\u2019re realizing that our stage isn\u2019t just about entertainment\u2014it\u2019s a way to share a modern expression of Eastern beauty,\u201d said MICHE. \u201cWe hope our music and performances can connect with audiences across cultures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A2O MAY is emerging as a vibrant representative of “Zalpha Pop”\u2014a fusion of Gen Z spirit and cross-cultural ambition. Following the interview, a senior entertainment columnist in Los Angeles praised the group, saying: \u201cThey have a rare mix of clarity and confidence. It\u2019s refreshing\u2014and they genuinely have global star potential.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This coming weekend, the group is set to perform at the Wango Tango<\/strong> music festival hosted by a major LA radio station, stepping further into the mainstream American spotlight.<\/span><\/p>\n
