LAPost\/LOS ANGELES, CA \u2014 June 3, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 In response to coordinated U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids across Los Angeles today, multiple Los Angeles County Supervisors issued strong public condemnations, describing the actions as unjust, fear-driven, and harmful to the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn<\/strong> decried the raids as \u201cchilling,\u201d stating that federal agents are not targeting violent criminals but rather \u201csweeping up hardworking people in our communities just trying to provide for their families.\u201d Hahn called for the immediate release of SEIU California President David Huerta<\/strong>, who was reportedly injured and detained while observing this morning\u2019s enforcement actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThese agents are armed to the teeth and it is clear their goal is to make people afraid\u2014and it\u2019s working,\u201d said Hahn. \u201cThis is a democracy. People have a right to peacefully protest, to observe law enforcement activity, and to speak out against injustice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Los Angeles County Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis<\/strong> also issued a sharp rebuke following ICE operations in Downtown Los Angeles, Westlake, and Cypress Park<\/strong>, including Skid Row<\/strong>, calling the raids “deeply disturbing.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe individuals detained are hardworking Angelenos who contribute to our local economy and labor force every day,\u201d said Solis. \u201cIt is horrifying that ICE targeted Skid Row to intimidate some of our most vulnerable residents. These actions betray the promises made to go after criminals\u2014not innocent, contributing members of our communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Solis emphasized the County\u2019s continued commitment to immigrant communities through the Office of Immigrant Affairs<\/strong> and its nonprofit support network.<\/span><\/p>\n

Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath<\/strong> described the raids as acts of \u201ccruelty and bigotry,\u201d adding that such actions are calculated to sow fear within communities of color.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe will not be intimidated, and we will not be silent,\u201d Horvath said. \u201cI\u2019m in direct communication with County, State, and community leaders to ensure all available protections from LA County are activated immediately. We must protect one another and stand together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Separately today, Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell<\/strong>, who also sits on the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) Board<\/strong>, issued a statement on a failed AQMD vote that would have implemented stricter air quality rules for gas appliances. Although unrelated to the ICE activity, Mitchell highlighted ongoing threats to public health and environmental justice, stating:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOver two thousand people die each year in Los Angeles County due to air pollution\u2014nearly four times the number of traffic deaths. We must act urgently to improve air quality, just as we must act to defend human dignity from unjust federal action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As community advocates rally in response to the day\u2019s events, Los Angeles County officials are urging calm while affirming their commitment to protecting immigrant families and upholding civil liberties.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
