Horvath and Kathryn Barger to extend housing price gouging protections for residents still displaced by the devastating January 2025 wildfires through August 30, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This action builds on the Board\u2019s first declaration of a local emergency on\u00a0<strong>January 7, 2025<\/strong>, activating housing price gouging protections under state and local law. This latest extension is authorized under state law, which permits local governments to renew protections every 30 days when necessary to protect life, property, or public welfare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven months in, our residents still need protection from predatory practices that make housing even more unaffordable and unattainable in these times of crisis,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath<\/strong>. \u201cBy extending these protections, we\u2019re helping ensure that every family has the chance to rebuild without fear of being priced out. If you suspect price gouging, report it to our Department of Consumer and Business Affairs so we can hold these bad actors accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s essential that we continue enforcing price gouging prohibitions to protect Eaton Fire survivors from unfair rent hikes,&#8221;\u00a0said\u00a0<strong>Supervisor Kathryn Barger.<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;No one recovering from disaster should face eviction or be priced out of temporary housing. These protections provide stability during a time when individuals and families need it most.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The motion extends through August 30, 2025<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0County enforcement of housing-related price gouging protections that limit rent and hotel rate increases during a declared emergency and prohibit evictions followed by relisting at higher prices.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Board\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lacounty.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5c8dabe8a1bb899103d17de83&amp;id=a4a8fcbc50&amp;e=370b698907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lacounty.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5c8dabe8a1bb899103d17de83%26id%3Da4a8fcbc50%26e%3D370b698907&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1753905186292000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2nrIAaCsyTtUWaAulT8AI1\">moved<\/a>\u00a0to strengthen enforcement by advancing an urgency ordinance that expands the County\u2019s ability to hold violators accountable during declared emergencies.
