{"id":76112,"date":"2025-10-09T12:44:28","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T19:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=76112"},"modified":"2025-10-09T19:34:35","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T02:34:35","slug":"kent-wong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=76112","title":{"rendered":"Chinese American Pioneer for Social Justice and Labor Equality, Kent Wong, Passes Away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"94\" data-end=\"406\"><strong data-start=\"94\" data-end=\"146\">LAPost \/ Los Angeles, October 9, 2025 (Thursday)<\/strong> \u2014<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The UCLA Labor Center announced with great sorrow on October 8 the passing of its former director, <strong data-start=\"250\" data-end=\"263\">Kent Wong<\/strong>, a leading figure in social justice and the labor movement who devoted over three decades to advancing workers\u2019 rights and immigrant equity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"408\" data-end=\"982\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kent Wong was the son of the late <strong data-start=\"442\" data-end=\"464\">Judge Delbert Wong<\/strong>, a renowned Chinese American jurist from Kaiping, Guangdong, and a third-generation Chinese immigrant. Judge Wong served as Deputy Legislative Counsel for the State of California and, in 1959, was appointed by then-Governor <strong>Pat Brown<\/strong>\u00a0as the first Chinese American judge in the continental United States (California Superior Court). He later joined <strong data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1382\">SEIU Local 660<\/strong>, where he continued his frontline advocacy for workers\u2019 rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1450\" data-end=\"2032\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since taking leadership of the <strong data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1502\">UCLA Labor Center<\/strong> in 1991, Wong expanded the center from a three-person office to a staff of 42, establishing its permanent home in <strong data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1635\">MacArthur Park<\/strong> and turning it into a national hub for labor and immigrant rights research. In 2010, he founded California\u2019s first <strong data-start=\"1751\" data-end=\"1776\">Dream Resource Center<\/strong> for undocumented youth and launched the nation\u2019s first <strong data-start=\"1832\" data-end=\"1859\">Dream Summer Fellowship<\/strong>. In 2021, he successfully secured state funding for the center\u2019s permanent facility, later named in honor of his mentor and civil rights leader, <strong data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2030\">Rev. James Lawson Jr.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2034\" data-end=\"2496\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As co-founder of UCLA\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2097\">Labor Studies undergraduate program<\/strong> and a professor for over twenty years, Wong taught courses in Labor Studies and Asian American Studies, mentoring thousands of students. Solis<\/strong>, Los Angeles County Chair Pro Teem and First District Supervisor and former U.S. Secretary of Labor, said in her statement on October 9:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2896\">\n<p data-start=\"2652\" data-end=\"2896\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cKent was not only my dear friend of thirty years but also a mentor and brother to countless workers. His efforts led to the creation of labor centers across nine California universities. He was a bridge between education and social justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2898\" data-end=\"3085\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">National labor organizations including the <strong data-start=\"2941\" data-end=\"2970\">United Auto Workers (UAW)<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"2979\" data-end=\"3052\">American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)<\/strong> also issued tributes, stating:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3086\" data-end=\"3302\">\n<p data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3302\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cProfessor Wong\u2019s vision and leadership inspired an entire generation of labor organizers. He reminded us that the fight for economic justice is inseparable from the pursuit of racial equality and human dignity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3304\" data-end=\"3412\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throughout his life, Wong was a tireless advocate for immigrants and low-wage workers. He once emphasized:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3413\" data-end=\"3657\">\n<p data-start=\"3415\" data-end=\"3657\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere are more than 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. They bore the hardest burdens during the pandemic yet remain invisible.
