First Female LACOFD PIO and 2025 Fire Prevention Perpetual Award of Excellence Winner<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Los Angeles, CA (October 28, 2025)<\/strong> – Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn honored two extraordinary members of the LA County Fire Department during this morning’s meeting of the Board of Supervisors, Captain Sheila Kelliher-Berkoh and Fire Fighter Specialist John Pfau.<\/p>\n

“We have the best Fire Department in the world, and these two members exemplify that excellence. We are indebted to them for their service to our communities, and today we have a chance to say thank you,”\u00a0said Hahn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hahn honored\u00a0Captain Sheila Kelliher-Berkoh<\/strong>, who is retiring from the department, for her long career with the fire department. Kelliher-Berkoh was the department\u2019s 15th female firefighter upon joining in 2000, and served as its first female Public Information Officer. In February, Kelliher was among dozens of firefighters honored with a standing ovation at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, and\u00a0announced Beyonc\u00e9 as the winner of Grammy for Album of the Year<\/a>\u00a0for “Cowboy Carter.”<\/p>\n

“Captain Kelliher has brought extraordinary poise and steadiness to our LA County Fire Department. She is a role model not only for other women in the Department, but to many in the communities she serves,”\u00a0said Hahn.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It is not lost on me that I’m\u00a0standing here today being\u00a0recognized by a board made up of\u00a0all women,”\u00a0said Kelliher during this morning’s ceremony, thanking Hahn and her colleagues for the recognition.<\/strong>\u00a0“As I step into retirement, I must\u00a0say you can take the girl out of\u00a0the firehouse, but you can’t take\u00a0the firehouse out of the girl.”<\/p>\n

Hahn also presented\u00a0Fire Fighter Specialist John Pfau<\/strong>\u00a0with the Fire Prevention Perpetual Award of Excellence for his work in the Santa Clarita Fire Prevention Office, conducting hundreds of field inspections of construction sites and large-scale events every year \u2013 including Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest.<\/p>\n

“Fire Fighter Specialist Pfau’s\u00a0dedication to training, policy development, interagency coordination, and mission leadership reflect the values of our Fire Department at the highest\u00a0level,\u00a0and we are so grateful that he is a member of our LA County Family,”\u00a0said Hahn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I don’t take this lightly, I\u00a0know how many great individuals\u00a0have stood here before and it is\u00a0such an honor to be standing in\u00a0front of you all of you.\u00a0One thing I want to mention is this\u00a0wasn’t done alone,”\u00a0said Pfau, thanking his colleagues and Department leadership.<\/strong>\u00a0“Thank you for giving us the\u00a0opportunity to effectively do\u00a0our job to do it safely and do\u00a0it with compassion and empathy.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
