{"id":76888,"date":"2025-11-02T20:13:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T04:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=76888"},"modified":"2025-11-02T20:13:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T04:13:19","slug":"korean-director-park-chan-wooks-new-film-no-other-choice-to-open-the-2025-asian-world-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=76888","title":{"rendered":"Korean Director Park Chan-wook\u2019s New Film \u201cNo Other Choice\u201d to Open the 2025 Asian World Film Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"112\" data-end=\"460\"><strong data-start=\"112\" data-end=\"155\">LAPost \/ Los Angeles (November 2, 2025)<\/strong> \u2014 According to an official press release from the Asian World Film Festival (AWFF), Korean director <strong data-start=\"256\" data-end=\"276\">Park Chan-wook\u2019s<\/strong> latest film <em data-start=\"289\" data-end=\"308\">\u201cNo Other Choice\u201d<\/em> has been selected as the <strong data-start=\"334\" data-end=\"350\">opening film<\/strong> of this year\u2019s festival, which will take place <strong data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"416\">November 11\u201320<\/strong> at the <strong data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"442\">Culver Theatre<\/strong> in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"462\" data-end=\"894\">In July 2025, <em data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"495\">\u201cNo Other Choice\u201d<\/em> was selected for the <strong data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"537\">main competition<\/strong> at the <strong data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"588\">82nd Venice International Film Festival<\/strong>, where it competed for the Golden Lion. It was also chosen as the <strong data-start=\"655\" data-end=\"671\">opening film<\/strong> of the <strong data-start=\"679\" data-end=\"721\">30th Busan International Film Festival<\/strong>. The <strong data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"750\">Korean Film Council<\/strong> later confirmed that the film would represent South Korea in the <strong data-start=\"816\" data-end=\"851\">Best International Feature Film<\/strong> category at the <strong data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"891\">98th Academy Awards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"1373\">Following its world premiere in Venice, the film received a <strong data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"988\">nine-minute standing ovation<\/strong> and scored <strong data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1016\">3.7 out of 4<\/strong> in the festival\u2019s official publication <em data-start=\"1056\" data-end=\"1072\">CIAK in Mostra<\/em>. On <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1096\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/strong>, <em data-start=\"1098\" data-end=\"1117\">\u201cNo Other Choice\u201d<\/em> achieved a <strong data-start=\"1129\" data-end=\"1150\">100% Fresh rating<\/strong>, with all 39 critics and journalists giving it positive reviews. Before its theatrical release in Korea, the film sold over <strong data-start=\"1275\" data-end=\"1303\">400,000 pre-sale tickets<\/strong>, setting the <strong data-start=\"1317\" data-end=\"1344\">highest pre-sale record<\/strong> for a Korean film in 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1375\" data-end=\"1677\">On its opening day, the film drew more than <strong data-start=\"1419\" data-end=\"1438\">330,000 viewers<\/strong>, topping the box office and marking the <strong data-start=\"1479\" data-end=\"1514\">highest opening-day performance<\/strong> of Park Chan-wook\u2019s career. It went on to <strong data-start=\"1557\" data-end=\"1612\">lead the daily box office for nine consecutive days<\/strong>, and drew <strong data-start=\"1623\" data-end=\"1647\">over 600,000 viewers<\/strong> during its opening weekend.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"2074\">According to reports, Park began developing <em data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1742\">\u201cNo Other Choice\u201d<\/em> in <strong data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1754\">2017<\/strong> but faced repeated difficulties securing investment and distribution. However, after the casting announcement featuring <strong data-start=\"1875\" data-end=\"1893\">Park Chan-wook<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1895\" data-end=\"1912\">Lee Byung-hun<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1918\" data-end=\"1932\">Son Ye-jin<\/strong>, production interest quickly surged. On <strong data-start=\"1973\" data-end=\"1991\">April 26, 2025<\/strong>, the film was officially confirmed to be <strong data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2071\">financed and distributed by CJ ENM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2076\" data-end=\"2562\">The <strong data-start=\"2080\" data-end=\"2116\">Asian World Film Festival (AWFF)<\/strong>, widely regarded as <strong data-start=\"2137\" data-end=\"2193\">the premier Asian film festival in the United States<\/strong>, will showcase outstanding films from <strong data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2264\">more than 30 Asian countries<\/strong>, including <strong data-start=\"2276\" data-end=\"2309\">20 national Oscar submissions<\/strong> for Best International Feature. Fifteen films will compete for the <strong data-start=\"2377\" data-end=\"2402\">Snow Leopard Trophies<\/strong>, awarded in categories such as <strong data-start=\"2434\" data-end=\"2447\">Best Film<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2449\" data-end=\"2463\">Best Actor<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2481\">Best Actress<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2483\" data-end=\"2511\">Jury Discretionary Award<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2535\">Special Jury Prize<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2541\" data-end=\"2559\">Audience Award<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2564\" data-end=\"2950\">In addition to <em data-start=\"2579\" data-end=\"2598\">\u201cNo Other Choice\u201d<\/em>, the <strong data-start=\"2604\" data-end=\"2620\">closing film<\/strong> of this year\u2019s festival will be <em data-start=\"2653\" data-end=\"2680\">\u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab\u201d<\/em>, directed by <strong data-start=\"2694\" data-end=\"2716\">Kaouther Ben Hania<\/strong> of Tunisia. Other festival highlights include <strong data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2817\">Cannes Palme d\u2019Or winner \u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2819\" data-end=\"2839\">\u201cA Useful Ghost\u201d<\/strong> by Thai director <strong data-start=\"2857\" data-end=\"2887\">Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2893\" data-end=\"2915\">\u201cLeft-Handed Girl\u201d<\/strong> directed by <strong data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2947\">Shih-Ching Tsou<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2952\" data-end=\"3421\">The festival will also feature <strong data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3007\">five world premieres<\/strong>, including <em data-start=\"3019\" data-end=\"3037\">\u201cLove and Karma\u201d<\/em> directed by <strong data-start=\"3050\" data-end=\"3072\">Giovannie Espiritu<\/strong> and <em data-start=\"3077\" data-end=\"3091\">\u201cSisterhood\u201d<\/em> directed by <strong data-start=\"3104\" data-end=\"3123\">Yoon Eun-kyoung<\/strong>. A special <strong data-start=\"3135\" data-end=\"3165\">10th anniversary screening<\/strong> of <em data-start=\"3169\" data-end=\"3185\">\u201cDragon Blade\u201d<\/em>, starring <strong data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3211\">Jackie Chan<\/strong>, will be held to celebrate the milestone. The film\u2019s <strong data-start=\"3265\" data-end=\"3299\">Hong Kong director, Daniel Lee<\/strong>, will attend the festival in person for this commemorative event, revisiting the historical action epic with audiences.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3423\" data-end=\"3751\">AWFF Executive Director and CEO <strong data-start=\"3455\" data-end=\"3479\">Georges N.
