During the event, AWFF Executive Director <strong data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1237\">Georges N. Chamchoum<\/strong> presented actress <strong data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1267\">Nina Ye<\/strong> with the festival\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1322\">Snow Leopard Rising Star Award<\/strong> for her breakout performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1354\" data-end=\"1357\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1409\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"1362\" data-end=\"1409\">A Story Born 25 Years Ago at The New School<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1411\" data-end=\"1850\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The origins of <em data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1444\">Left-Handed Girl<\/em> stretch back to 2000, when Tsou and Baker met as graduate students at The New School in New York. Both were drawn to realist filmmaking and independent storytelling. During a film editing class, Tsou shared a memory from her childhood: her grandfather\u2019s belief that using the left hand was \u201cthe hand of the devil.\u201d Baker, having never heard of such a tradition, immediately said, \u201cThis should be a movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1852\" data-end=\"1878\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The idea stayed with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"2269\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2001, Tsou brought Baker to Taiwan for the first time. The pair wandered night markets, scouted locations, and began shaping the earliest version of the script. But the project\u2014ambitious in scope and set in Taipei\u2019s sprawling night-market world\u2014failed to attract investors. Yet again, the project stalled due to lack of financing.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2528\" data-end=\"2531\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2533\" data-end=\"2597\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2597\">A Cannes Breakthrough, and the Film Finally Comes to Life<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2965\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The turning point came in 2021, when Baker\u2019s <em data-start=\"2644\" data-end=\"2656\">Red Rocket<\/em> premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. French investors, intrigued by Tsou\u2019s long-gestating script, agreed to support the film\u2014provided that Taiwanese financing could also be secured. With the final pieces in place, <em data-start=\"2873\" data-end=\"2891\">Left-Handed Girl<\/em> moved into production more than two decades after its initial conception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2967\" data-end=\"3366\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For Tsou, the film is deeply personal.<\/span><br data-start=\"3005\" data-end=\"3008\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<strong data-start=\"3009\" data-end=\"3057\">This is my story, and I had to make it real,<\/strong>\u201d she said during the Q&amp;A. \u201cSome traditions, like valuing sons over daughters or shaming a child for using her left hand, still exist. They certainly existed in my own family. People don\u2019t talk about these things, or they pretend they\u2019re gone. Tsou explained that the original script was written in English, which she later translated into Mandarin dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4495\" data-end=\"4826\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSean might not understand the language,\u201d she said, \u201cbut he is a deeply experienced editor with an extraordinary sensitivity to emotion. When we watched the raw footage, he was always able to choose the most authentic, honest performance\u2014even without subtitles.
