South Whittier, CA<\/strong>\u2014Today, LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department collected 289 guns at a gun buyback event in South Whittier. \u00a0This is the sixteenth gun buyback Hahn has held in her district sine 2022 and brings the total amount of unwanted guns her office has helped collect and destroy to 2,967.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do these gun buybacks because I know that there are people who have guns that they do not want in their homes but don\u2019t know how to get rid of them. This provides an opportunity for people to do that safely and legally,\u201d\u00a0said Supervisor Hahn.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThis was one of our more successful gun buyback events. We collected ghost guns, assault rifles and handguns which drive violent crime and cause real problems for our deputies. I am grateful to have these off the street and out of our neighborhoods and I appreciate everyone who took the time to turn in a gun today.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 289 functioning guns collected included 129 pistols, 85 rifles, 41 shotguns, 21 ghost guns, and 13 assault rifles. The event took place in the parking lot of the South Whittier Community Resource Center with cars wrapped around the block for much of the day.\u00a0 Deputies from the Norwalk Sheriff\u2019s Station removed guns from trunks and processed them and distributed gift cards. Representatives from the LA County Office of Violence Prevention also offered free gun locks to individuals who still have guns at home. The simple devices help prevent accidental discharge or use of the gun by someone other than the owner, such as a child.<\/p>\n

Many people participating in today\u2019s event told Supervisor Hahn they have long had guns they did not want but did not know how to safely and legally get rid of them.\u00a0 These gun buybacks offer an opportunity for people to remove guns from their home and get gift cards to help with holiday shopping.<\/p>\n

Participants received Amazon gift cards in exchange for their guns. The dollar amount differed for different types of firearms:<\/p>\n
