(Photo courtesy of the Myanmar Gazette)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"td_block_wrap tdb_single_content tdi_69 td-pb-border-top td_block_template_1 td-post-content tagdiv-type\" data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_69\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p>In Oakland, California, 102-year-old U Mya uses YouTube and Messenger to maintain spiritual and social connections. \u201cWhen I talk to my friends online, I don\u2019t feel lonely anymore.\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p>Within the US Burmese community,\u00a0digital literacy has become a lifeline. \u201cDigital literacy is necessary for easier, faster communication,\u201d said retired architect Myo Sein.<\/p>\n<p>At the\u00a0Gerontological Society of America\u00a02025 symposium,\u00a0University of Central Florida\u00a0researchers Dr. Ladda\u00a0Thiamwong and Chitra Banerjee highlighted how digital health\u2019s portability and real-time feedback empower underserved seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntegrating digital health technologies that offer reminders and progress tracking can motivate low-income older adults to stay active and enhance both physical function and mental health,\u201d noted Dr.\u00a0Thiamwong.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-bridging-the-gap-in-health-equity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bridging the Gap in Health Equity<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the benefits, social inequalities persist. Dr.\u00a0Su-I Hou utilized data from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to expose a stark disparity: 93% of health-literate seniors come from financially secure backgrounds, compared to only 65% among those facing financial hardship. This data suggests that internet usage and digital skills are direct determinants of health literacy.<\/p>\n<p>To bridge this gap, experts argue that digitalization must prioritize human rights over pure technical advancement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy bridging these digital gaps, we can lead our entire aging community toward healthier, more empowered lives.\u201d\u00a0Dr. Hou explained.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-human-centered-innovation-and-dementia-prevention\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human-Centered Innovation and Dementia Prevention<\/h2>\n<p>Digital literacy is also emerging as a powerful tool in reducing the risk of cognitive decline. Findings from the\u00a0Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability\u00a0\u2014 FINGER \u2014 study indicates that multimodal lifestyle\u00a0intervention\u00a0including cognitive training via digital devices significantly support brain health.<\/p>\n<p>Anurag Ramchandran, co-founder of Kubo Care, advocates for a \u201chuman-centered\u201d approach to this innovation. He believes technology should be built with seniors, not just for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnology shouldn\u2019t run ahead of older adults; it should take them forward,\u201d Ramchandran stated.<\/p>\n<p>Cho Maung of the One Myanmar Community Center facilitates government-provided devices for low-income seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWearables now enable real-time health monitoring, making digital literacy a daily necessity,\u201d said Aung Naing, CEO of Peti Senior Center\u00a0in Elmhurst, New York. He noted that digital engagement stimulates the brain and combats isolation, leading the center to integrate device training into its programs.
