Faced with high-pressure careers, identity anxiety, and fast-paced lifestyles, more people are seeking inner healing and spiritual support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"501\" data-end=\"966\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Against this backdrop, Tibetan Buddhist teacher the H.H. Gurdag Dragmar Khentrul Rinpoche, has gradually gained attention in recent years. Gurdag Dragmar Khentrul Rinpoche<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1030\" data-end=\"1231\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the invitation of LAPost, H.H. Gurdag Dragmar Khentrul Rinpoche recently sat down for an exclusive interview to discuss his spiritual journey, Buddhist philosophy, and his observations on modern anxiety and emotional struggles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1233\" data-end=\"1463\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rinpoche was born into a Buddhist family near Putuo Mountain, one of China\u2019s most sacred Buddhist sites. He shared that both his grandmother and mother were devoted Buddhists, and that he began studying Buddhism from an early age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1776\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen I came to the United States at age 16 to study, the cultural changes and language barriers caused me tremendous anxiety,\u201d he recalled. During one of the most confusing periods of his life, he visited a nearby temple seeking inner peace and met his spiritual teacher, H.H. Gurdag Dragmar Khentrul Rinpoche.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1778\" data-end=\"2100\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMy teacher told me that I had a deep karmic connection with Buddhism and that benefiting sentient beings through Dharma was the path I was meant to follow,\u201d he said. Rinpoche recalled that his teacher presented him with a full set of lama robes, a moment he described as bringing an overwhelming sense of joy and calling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2199\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cLater, I gradually realized that this was not a path I chose \u2014 it was a path I was remembering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2446\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a practitioner within the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, Rinpoche completed the traditional \u201cthree years and three months\u201d retreat, considered one of the most rigorous forms of long-term spiritual training in Tibetan Buddhism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2448\" data-end=\"2513\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cRetreat is not an escape,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is truly a return home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2515\" data-end=\"2649\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He explained that the experience helped him deeply understand how attachment creates suffering, while letting go brings genuine peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2651\" data-end=\"2812\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Following years of retreat and meditation practice, Rinpoche said his sense of compassion and responsibility toward others became increasingly real and grounded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2814\" data-end=\"2964\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Speaking about the Nyingma tradition, he described it as the oldest lineage in Tibetan Buddhism, originally introduced to Tibet by Guru Padmasambhava.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2966\" data-end=\"3120\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt emphasizes directly recognizing the true nature of the mind,\u201d he explained. \u201cLuminosity, emptiness, and compassion already exist within every person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3217\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throughout his teachings, Rinpoche consistently emphasizes the importance of \u201cpure motivation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3219\" data-end=\"3402\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf one practices only for fame, self-satisfaction, or escape from reality, it is difficult to cultivate true merit,\u201d he said. \u201cTrue practice is the aspiration to benefit all beings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3404\" data-end=\"3572\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As mental health awareness continues to grow in American society, meditation and Eastern spiritual practices have increasingly entered the lives of younger generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3574\" data-end=\"3673\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Rinpoche, what modern people lack most is \u201cthe ability to be present with themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3675\" data-end=\"3843\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPeople are constantly chasing outward distractions while rarely returning inward,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is why anxiety, depression, and confusion have become so widespread.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3845\" data-end=\"3940\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For beginners interested in meditation, he recommends starting simply with breathing exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3942\" data-end=\"4046\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cEven five to ten minutes a day is enough,\u201d he said. \u201cThe key is gentleness and consistency, not force.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4048\" data-end=\"4167\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In his view, the greatest value of Buddhism and meditation is not eliminating all suffering, but cultivating awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4169\" data-end=\"4259\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen you learn to observe your emotions without drowning in them, you gain true freedom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81081\" Gurdag Dragmar Khentrul Rinpoche, during an interview with LAPost (Photo by: YT Liu\/LAPost)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"4382\" data-end=\"4625\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Currently, the Gongsang Buddha Center Foundation and ManYuan Buddhist Temple founded by Rinpoche continue to offer meditation classes, Dharma teachings, compassion training camps, and community outreach programs throughout Southern California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4627\" data-end=\"4945\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition to spiritual counseling, the organizations actively participate in community service, including support for the homeless, companionship programs for seniors, and environmental initiatives. During the pandemic, the organization donated more than 5,000 masks to local fire departments and police departments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4947\" data-end=\"5079\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTrue Buddhism does not exist only inside temples,\u201d he said. \u201cIt should live within communities and within kindness between people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5081\" data-end=\"5318\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Looking ahead, Rinpoche hopes to establish more systematic Buddhist and meditation training programs in the United States and organize workshops and retreats across California, allowing more people to experience Eastern wisdom firsthand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5320\" data-end=\"5484\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the conclusion of the interview, when asked what he would like to say to young people struggling with anxiety and uncertainty, Rinpoche paused before responding:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5486\" data-end=\"5673\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDear child, your heart is inherently luminous. It is only temporarily covered by clouds. Be gentle with yourself. Return to your breath. Return to the present moment. You are not alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5675\" data-end=\"5735\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He summarized his understanding of Buddhism in one sentence:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5737\" data-end=\"5904\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDeep within your heart, there is a light that has never gone out. Buddhism is the path that helps you find that light \u2014 and use it to illuminate yourself and others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5906\" data-end=\"6240\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Drawing from his own spiritual experience, Rinpoche also explained the relationship between Buddhism and Taoist practices. In his view, while both belong to Eastern spiritual traditions, Buddhism focuses more on inner cultivation and transformation, while Taoist practices tend to address practical and worldly concerns more directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6242\" data-end=\"6550\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Within Buddhism, he explained, the emphasis lies on karma and inner transformation. When facing relationship conflicts or emotional difficulties, Buddhist practice focuses less on changing external circumstances and more on transforming one\u2019s own mind through chanting, repentance, and spiritual cultivation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6552\" data-end=\"6711\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By contrast, Taoist practices often focus on direct adjustment of physical, emotional, or environmental conditions through rituals or energy-balancing methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6713\" data-end=\"6968\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rinpoche also noted that after the pandemic, the demand for emotional healing and inner restoration has grown significantly, especially among younger generations.
