Either a country which has treated the United States unfairly on Trade negotiates a fair deal, or it gets hit with Tariffs. It\u2019s as simple as that &#8211; and everybody\u2019s talking! Trump (@realDonaldTrump)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1021719098265362432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 24, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"lXdlfE\">The administration reportedly plans to give farmers $12 billion in emergency aid to cope with the fallout from the tariff regime, Politico first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/07\/24\/trump-trade-aid-for-farmers-737108\">reported Tuesday<\/a>. Farmers have been among those hit hardest under Trump\u2019s protectionist trade agenda, as foreign countries levy tens of billions of dollars in retaliatory tariffs largely on the American agricultural industry. China, Mexico, and Canada have responded to the Trump administration\u2019s taxes on imported steel, aluminum, and electronics with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-agriculture\/2018\/06\/06\/piling-on-retaliatory-tariffs-on-ag-243270\">taxes on American soybeans, dairy, pork, apples, and potatoes<\/a>, as well as other US products.<\/p>\n<p id=\"WLqH5b\">The impact of tariffs on US agriculture is no joke. Prices for agricultural products like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/07\/11\/news\/economy\/soybean-prices\/index.html\">soybeans have dropped to a 10-year low<\/a>\u00a0since Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on trade and aluminum earlier this year. And farmers across different markets have grown increasingly nervous about how their businesses will fare if the trade war continues.<\/p>\n<p id=\"jEiQC0\">The administration\u2019s plan, which has yet to be formally released, would reportedly be aimed at stabilizing the agricultural industry through three programs:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"6a6gUG\">Direct financial assistance for farmers.<\/li>\n<li id=\"5rKkMt\">A purchase and distribution program, where the government buys up surplus agricultural products and redistributes them for low-income food assistance.<\/li>\n<li id=\"NY0lf8\">A trade promotion program.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"Pw3L68\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/white-house-readies-plan-for-12-billion-in-emergency-aid-to-farmers-caught-in-trumps-escalating-trade-war\/2018\/07\/24\/7bec9af4-8f4d-11e8-b769-e3fff17f0689_story.html?utm_term=.34a70fdaa17a\">The Washington Post reported<\/a>\u00a0that this stabilization package will use a Depression-era program that allows the government to borrow up to $30 billion from the Treasury without congressional approval.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-ad m-ad__dynamic_ad_unit m-ad__desktop_article_body\" data-concert-ads-name=\"desktop_article_body\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-desktop_article_body\" class=\"dynamic-js-slot\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"DKoEQh\">Some kind of fix for farmers has been in the works for quite some time. Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX), who chairs the House Agricultural Committee, told Vox last week that he was confident the administration would act to help farmers \u201cpersevere\u201d through this period.<\/p>\n<p id=\"OVHC2G\">\u201cThe president has great agriculture advisers around him, and his public comments indicate that he understands this is troubling to the folks in the production of agriculture in Middle America,\u201d Conaway said. \u201c[Agriculture Secretary] Sonny Perdue has some tools that he\u2019s working on to mitigate in some small way the impact the tariffs are having.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"KIr5QO\">Meanwhile, Trump appears steadfast in his tariff agenda.
