{"id":9751,"date":"2018-08-30T15:49:45","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T22:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=9751"},"modified":"2018-08-30T15:49:45","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T22:49:45","slug":"trump-nixes-pay-raise-for-federal-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=9751","title":{"rendered":"Trump nixes pay raise for federal employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 President Donald Trump says he plans to freeze automatic pay raises for civilian federal employees in 2019, citing the need for government belt-tightening.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Trump said he is zeroing out both across-the-board pay increases as well as locality pay raises that are based on where federal employees live. The scheduled pay raises were set to go into effect in January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must maintain efforts to put our nation on a fiscally sustainable course, and federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases,\u201d Trump said in the letter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"Ad Widget in_article\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" data-status=\"init\">\n<div class=\"Ad-content\">\n<div id=\"DFP_slot_wtop_mobile_backfill_1\" class=\"wtop_mobile_backfill\" data-status=\"init\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In his letter, Trump said federal pay would have automatically risen by 2.1 percent next year.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/government\/2017\/04\/federal-workers-due-for-pay-increase-after-hiring-freeze-ends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved a 1.4 percent pay raise<\/a>\u00a0for federal employees. However, in the budget plan he released earlier this year, setting spending priorities for the coming year, Trump indicated he would seek a freeze on federal pay.The freeze affects employees covered by the General Schedule, which is the majority of the federal workforce.\u00a0Military members are set to receive a 2.6 percent raise in 2019,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/federalnewsradio.com\/your-money\/2018\/08\/trump-gives-word-on-federal-pay-for-2019\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal News Radio reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Congress could override Trump\u2019s freeze, but there are differing plans in the House in the Senate.\u00a0 A spending plan approved by the Senate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/federalnewsradio.com\/your-money\/2018\/08\/senate-clears-2019-federal-pay-raise-despite-white-house-opposition\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backs a 1.9 percent pay raise<\/a>\u00a0for federal employees, but the House version of the spending bill doesn\u2019t include the measure, Federal News Radio reported.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Congress from the D.C. region assailed Trump\u2019s announcement and vowed to work to block it from going into effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress can and must stand up to the President and reject this assault on our federal workers by passing the 1.9 percent pay raise that the Senate approved on Aug. 1,\u201d Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Barbara Comstock, a Virginia Republican, issued a statement calling Trump\u2019s announcement only a \u201cpossible elimination\u201d of the federal pay raise and pledging to work with her colleagues to have the pay bump included in the House\u2019s spending bill.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Gerry Connolly, another Virginia Democrat, said Trump\u2019s move was akin to \u201ctrying to balance the budget on the backs of federal workers.\u201d A bill Connolly sponsored, the FAIR Act, would provide a 3 percent pay raise for the federal civilian workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said the pay freeze would not \u201cmaterially affect\u201d the federal government\u2019s ability to recruit qualified workers.
