Board of Supervisors votes to replace decrepit Men’s Central Jail with a new Mental Health Treatment Center

From “jail-first” to “care-first”

Yesterday, supervisor Janice Hahn voted to tear down Men’s Central Jail. It’s dangerous, it’s decrepit, and it’s wholly inconsistent with our values and sense of human decency.

In its place, supervisor Janice Hahn proposed building a Mental Health Treatment Center which will be staffed by doctors and nurses from the Department of Mental Health. Experts estimate that today 3,100 inmates experiencing severe mental illness are currently in LA County custody and are not getting the treatment they need.  Supervisor Janice Hahn is confident that this paradigm shift from a “jail-first model” to a “care-first model” will lead to more effective and compassionate care, lower rates of recidivism, and improved public safety.

Supervisor Janice Hahn is proud that LA County is once again on the leading edge of criminal justice reform. Supervisor Janice Hahn expresses thanks to everyone who made their voices heard throughout this entire process,
