L.A. Metro to Hold Informational Meetings for North San Fernando Valley Bus Rapid Transit Project
The $180-million, 18- to 20-mile project aims to build a high-quality Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line that will link key activity centers and help create a comprehensive transit network in the San Fernando Valley, traveling east-west between North Hollywood and Chatsworth, and offering connections to the Metro Orange Line, Metro Red Line and Metrolink. Connections are planned with the future East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Line on Van Nuys Boulevard and the North Hollywood to Pasadena BRT Line.
The project area includes the communities of Chatsworth, Northridge, North Hills, Panorama City and North Hollywood, all within the city of Los Angeles. Among the major destinations along the corridor are medical centers, the Northridge Fashion Center, California State University Northridge (CSUN) and the Panorama Mall and Panorama City area.
The project’s goal is to provide a fast and reliable BRT line that improves access to jobs, education, essential services and the regional transit system. This new line will also offer a more sustainable mobility option by utilizing zero-emission buses.
BRT is a high-quality bus service that provides faster and more reliable, equitable and convenient service. BRT features may include fewer stops, frequent service, dedicated bus lanes, high-quality stations with amenities, transit signal priority, all-door boarding, convenient fare payment and more prominent branding and signage.
The project is funded by the Measure M sales tax approved by L.A. County voters in 2016 and is scheduled to be completed by 2025. It aims to meet priorities set out in Metro’s Vision 2028 strategic plan to offer high-quality mobility options and outstanding trip experiences, while enhancing communities and lives through better transportation options and access to opportunity.
The project is scheduled for consideration at the Thursday, September 26, Metro Board of Directors regular meeting, at which time the Board will direct staff which alternatives to study in the next phase of environmental review.
The informational meetings will be held in North Hollywood, Panorama City and Northridge, and are designed to be a two-way dialogue with Metro offering information on the current proposed alternatives. The meetings also give Metro a chance to listen to feedback from the community on the proposed alternatives for the project, key destinations they’d like the project to connect with and what their transit priorities are. The meetings will include family-friendly activities.
