Consulate General of Sri Lanka for Western States of USA participated at the Sri Lanka Day Celebration organized by the Sri Lanka Foundation held on July 20th 2019 at Pasadena City Hall, Pasadena California.

The key objective of participation this event was to ensure American community that Sri Lanka is still a safe place to travel. Consulate staff were able to distribute broachers about Sri Lanka encouraging American travelers to travel to Sri Lanka despite the recent setback after Easter Sunday attack in Sri Lanka. As the day got hotter by mid-day, visitors enjoyed Sri Lanka specialty tea served by the staff. Ceylon iced tea was very well received by the visitors.

Highlight of the event was the visit by HE Rodney Perera, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to United States of America. In parallel with his first official visit to Los Angeles, Consulate General of Sri Lanka for Western States of USA with the collaboration of Los Angeles World Affair’s Council organized a Round Table Discussion at 1901 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles, CA on Monday July 22nd 2019. The discussion was moderated by Terry McCarthy, former President of World Affair’s Council and were attended by broad spectrum of audience. Ambassador gave an overview of US-Sri Lanka relations and briefed about Easter Sunday attack and measures taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure the safety of all.

The Consul General of Sri Lanka Swarna Gunaratne hosted a gathering to welcome HE Rodney Perera, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States of America at her Official Residence on July 23rd 2019. Starting her welcome speech, the Consul general warmly welcomed the Ambassador to Los Angeles and thanked him for choosing Los Angeles to make his first official visit. She further thanked Dr Walter Jayasinghe, Founder of Sri Lanka Foundation for a successful completion of showcasing our rich culture, music, dance, food and also giving opportunities for various exporters from Sri Lanka to find market for their products in California.

Highlighting important projects, she undertook for the last three years she mentioned about the landmark event the Consulate General organized to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Independence at the “Royce Hall of UCLA”. Explaining series of events Consulate undertook to attract business, foreign Investments and Tourism, she noted that one of the greatest achievements was having worked with Los Angeles County Museum Art to hold Sri Lanka focused exhibition for period of 6 months first time in USA at a very prominent venue. As a result of seminars, she informed the audience there was a delegation from Los Angeles visited Sri Lanka few weeks ago to meet with Hon. Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development to discuss possibilities of investing in the Port City project.

Addressing the audience, HE Rodney Perera stated that his objective is to strengthen trade and economic relations, widening people to people contacts, and promoting tourism between the two countries. Ambassador also mentioned that during his visit to Los Angeles he was delighted to meet with several very successful Sri Lankan businessmen/Entrepreneurs who are already making a positive contribution towards social progress and the Economic development of the country.

 

Ambassador’s visit was concluded with few visits to companies owned by successful Sri Lankan Entrepreneurs in Tea, Spices and Gems.
