BOARD TO APPROVE $100K REWARD IN RESPONSE TO AMBUSH OF SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES

LOS ANGELES COUNTY —Today, the Board of Supervisors will hear a motion by Supervisor Kathryn Barger and co-authored by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas to authorize a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the assailant who ambushed two sheriff’s deputies who were sitting in their patrol vehicle in Compton on Saturday night.

“I was horrified to see the chilling footage of two young sheriff’s deputies ambushed while stationed in their vehicle outside the MLK Transit Center,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “In response to this tragic attack targeting our law enforcement personnel, I am introducing a $100,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of the person who committed this heinous act. I understand several cities and agencies are also contributing to this reward, recognizing the chilling impacts of this crime on our communities – bringing the current total to $175,000.”

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the deputies and their families,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. “I urge anyone with information about this heinous crime to assist in the investigation and prevent the perpetrator from hurting anyone else.”

The incident occurred Saturday, September 12, at approximately 6:58 p.m., at the MLK Transit Center in Compton. The suspect approached the vehicle from behind and fired several rounds from his firearm at the deputies, striking them. Both deputies sustained critical injuries. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“As we continue to confront COVID-19 and the profound impact it has had on the most vulnerable among us, we need to stay focused on supporting each-other and helping our communities,” Supervisor Barger continued.  “The ongoing rhetoric against law enforcement is dangerous for those who are working to serve and protect us – and it is dangerous for the communities that they are trying to protect.”
