Dallas Police Officer Accused in Neighbor’s Death Fired
The Dallas police officer who fatally shot an upstairs neighbor after entering his apartment earlier this month has been fired from the department.
An internal affairs investigation found that Amber Guyger “engaged in adverse conduct” in connection with the shooting of 26-year-old Botham Jean, and she was sacked by Police Chief U. Renee Hall during a hearing held Monday.
“Officer Guyger was terminated for her actions,” the department said in a press release.
Guyger was hired by the department in November of 2013, and had been assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division, cops said.
She was charged with manslaughter in Jean’s death after claiming she parked on the wrong floor of her apartment complex. She said that she shot Jean because she believed he was an intruder in her apartment, which was located exactly one floor below his.
However, neighbors have disputed her version of what happened on Sept. 6, saying they heard Guyger knocking hard on the door prior to the shots being fired. She had claimed the door was unlocked and slightly ajar.
A grand jury could decide on more serious charges against Guyger, who is out on bond. She has moved out of the apartment.
Guyger was returning home from a 15-hour shift when the fatal incident took place.
She has a right to appeal her termination, according to the department.
