ELAC Selected as 2018 Champion for Higher Education

ELAC has been named a 2018 Champion for Higher Education by The Campaign for College Opportunity for exemplary work in awarding Associate Degrees for Transfer. ELAC is one of twelve California Community Colleges and four California State University campuses being recognized as a Champion of Higher Education this year. ELAC will be announced in the category of “Growth in Associate Degrees for Transfer Awarded” for increasing its number of ADTs awarded by 206 between the 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
The majority of California students who go to college attend a California Community College, and most of them intend to transfer to a four-year university. Unfortunately, only 4% of students successfully do so every year. This is why in 2010 with then Senator Alex Padilla, the Campaign for College Opportunity sponsored historic transfer reform legislation that created a clearer path for students to earn an associate degree and guaranteed admission to the California State University (CSU) with junior standing. To date, over 100,000 students have earned an Associate Degree for Transfer and those who enrolled in the CSU earned their Bachelor’s degree nearly twice as fast as other transfer students. ELAC is a leading example of strong implementation of the Associate Degree for Transfer pathway for students and a model for other colleges in California to emulate.
“It is an honor for ELAC to be recognized as a Champion for Higher Education by The Campaign for College Opportunity,” said ELAC President Marvin Martinez. “Being recognized for the implementation of the Associate Degree for Transfer reaffirms ELAC’s commitment to empower students to achieve their educational goals. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our faculty and staff in serving our highly diverse student population and serving as a springboard for many in our community.”
