■ Relationship issues with cancer
Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach hosts Beverly B. Palmer, Ph.D., author and clinical psychologist on Friday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at 109 W. Torrance Blvd., Redondo Beach. Participants will learn tools to deal with issues that arise in relationships when one of the partners has cancer. Palmer will also respond to questions during the workshop. ■ HB Chamber Holiday Sidewalk Festival
The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau will host the annual Holiday Sidewalk Festival in downtown Hermosa Beach Friday, Nov. 16 through Sunday, Nov. 18 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The holiday season officially begins with the city offering special experiences and seasonal gifts to kickstart shopping in a festive environment. The family-friendly event allows residents and visitors to browse through merchandise on the sidewalks of Pier and Hermosa avenues, enjoy live music at several locations and take advantage of restaurant open houses and special features, including children’s activities. ■ The Boys of Summer Eagles tribute

■ El Camino College Concert Band
The El Camino College Concert Band is set to perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 17, at 16007 Crenshaw Blvd. in Torrance. Featuring a variety of musicians – from high school students to retirees – the ECC Concert Band performs traditional and contemporary wind-band literature. The program will include Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide Suite,” Bruce Broughton’s “Silverado,” and Sammy Nestico’s “Salute to American Jazz,” among other selections. ■ SEA Lab Badge Series
The SEA Lab Badge Series, “Sustainable Fishing,” takes place beginning Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon, at 1021 N. Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach. The two-part workshop will fulfill various girl and boy scout badge requirements. The keynote speaker John Ballotti will begin the day by sharing his expertise on sustainable fishing practices and Marine Protected Areas near the South Bay. Then, a hands-on fishing class takes place. The event is $20 for first participant, $18 each additional participant. Parents are free with participant sign up.
■ Artlife Gallery artist reception
The Artlife Gallery, located at 720 C.S. Allied Way in Plaza El Segundo, hosts an artist’s reception Saturday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. In “Being Present,” Artlife Gallery presents the work of a group of artists dedicated to a passion for beauty as well as heart-touching moments and reflections. This group exhibit includes photographs, paintings and sculptures. “Being Present” features artwork by Kathryn Egli, Noel Roque, Judy Lange, Melody Brown, Joanne Mattillo- Chase, Alison Corteen, Regine Legler, Larry Lubow, Santiago Aulet, Joel Luna, and Vanesa Andrade. There will be live music by Dave Carroll, refreshments, and an opportunity to mingle with the featured artists at the reception. ■ El Camino College Jazz Band
The ECC Concert Jazz Band will present “Las Cucarachas Entran…” at 3 p.m. Nov. 18 in Marsee Auditorium, at 16007 Crenshaw Blvd. in Torrance. El Camino College’s premier big band will present a program of big-band music by John Beasley, directing the concert is ECC faculty member Alan Chan, a critically acclaimed jazz artist who has lived and toured in the United States, Asia and Europe. ■ ‘Take Every Wave’ Laird Hamilton screening
‘Take Every Wave,’ a documentary on surfing icon Laird Hamilton, screens at the John Olguin Auditorium, located at 3720 Stephen M White Drive in San Pedro, Sunday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. The screening is part of the film series “The Beauty of Nature,” which is presented by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Laird’s biographical story is told against the backdrop of a winter surf season on Kauai, where El Niño storm systems threaten to bring the biggest surf in decades. “Take Every Wave” provides an intimate, uncompromising look at a lifetime devoted to riding giant surf—and the price an athlete pays for greatness.
