ELAC’s DSP&S Students Receive $6.3 Million of Free Tuition from the CA Department of Rehabilitation

There are 242 ELAC students who are receiving free tuition for the Fall 2018 semester to pursue an Associate degree, Bachelor degree or a Master degree at the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) level.
All 242 of the students are part of ELAC’s Diversabilities Support Program & Services (DSP&S). The DSP&S program works in partnership with the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) to help students pursue their higher education goals. Of the 242 students, 197 students are currently enrolled at ELAC for Fall 2018 semester. The remaining 45 students have already transferred to a UC, CSU or Private University.
Students qualify for this program by having a recognized and verifiable disability. They also have to pass their classes with A or B grades in order to prepare to continue on to a four-year university. Funding to pay for the students’ tuition fees comes from the DOR (80 %) and Federal and State funding (20 %.) This year, the projected amount that the Federal and State government will provide towards our ELAC students’ educational fees is $6,323,000.00.
The free tuition lasts as long as each student is attending a public or private training/school program. The DOR also provides funding for books, training/school supplies, monthly transportation while attending the training/school program, and all necessary equipment needed to complete the students’ intended educational goal.
Even after the students complete their public or private training/school, the DOR provides a Job Developer to assist each student with job searches as needed.
