Gov. Gary Newsom declares statewide emergency as more than 180,000 people evacuated in California fires

California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Sunday as fires in the northern and southern parts of the state grew and evacuations continued.

“We are deploying every resource available, and are coordinating with numerous agencies as we continue to respond to these fires,” Newsom said in a statement. “It is critical that people in evacuation zones heed the warnings from officials and first responders, and have the local and state resources they need as we fight these fires.”

Almost 200,000 people have been forced to evacuate in northern California, where a blaze jumped I-80 and forced the evacuation of California State University Maritime Academy, 30 miles northeast of San Francisco.

The Kincade Fire continued to sweep through Sonoma County just north of San Francisco, forcing more than 180,000 people out of their homes in anticipation of heavy winds expected to spread the blaze, the county Sheriff’s Department said Sunday morning.
