LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas Invites You to Celebrate Earth Day

Los Angeles, CA (April 22, 2020) Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas launched the #EarthDay50 social media campaign to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of Earth Day, which marks its 50th anniversary. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important more than ever to stay positive and do our part to help keep the world safe.

“I invite local residents to join in celebrating Earth Day by participating in activities that will help to protect our environment,” said Supervisor Ridley-Thomas. “Earth Day is important because it reminds us that the actions, we take now will have a long-lasting effect on the environment and the world that future generations will live in.”

The Empowerment Congress’ Equitable Economy Community Development Committee (EECD Committee) partnered with Supervisor Ridley-Thomas to encourage constituents to take part in daily challenges. Each day through the week of April 20-25, they asked individuals to post photos of themselves practicing environmental stewardship from home, being active, observing nature, and giving tips on how to serve the planet.

“The Earth is still our greatest resource despite our current crisis. The Earth was provided for us to nurture, support and sustain our well-being. Join me in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day,” said Arna Fulcher, co-chair of the EECD Committee.

The campaign kicked off the week by encouraging residents to share their best photos of their favorite outdoor spots/activities, since “Safer At Home” orders have led to cleaner air. Today, everyone is urged to buy fresh, local produce and post their favorite recipes and/or best gardening tips. On Thursday, the campaign recommended that homeowners show how they save energy. To end the week, people were asked to Go Metro and/or to take a photo of themselves on a walk or bike ride.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries. This year, Earth Day falls on Wednesday, April 22.
