Rep. Rouda Votes to Pass Bipartisan George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Harley Rouda (CA-48) voted to pass the bipartisan George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would transform the culture of policing to address systemic racism and increase police accountability and transparency.
“Millions of Americans, from Orange County to Minneapolis, have demanded accountability, reform, and justice — Congress has listened,” said Rouda. “Today, I voted to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a common-sense and comprehensive bill to increase transparency and curb police brutality. This long-overdue legislation, led by my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus, is the culmination of decades of advocacy and peaceful protest. I will keep fighting to make our nation a more perfect union for men like George Floyd, women like Breonna Taylor, and all Americans facing injustice.”
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would:
- Ban chokeholds;
- Stop no-knock warrants;
- End the qualified immunity doctrine that is a barrier to holding police officers accountable for wrongful conduct;
- Combat racial profiling;
- Mandate data collection, including body cameras and dashboard cameras; and
- Establish new standards for policing.
