Steady Decline of Daily Hospitalizations Continues
Public Health Reports 10 New Deaths and 1,030 New Positive Cases of Confirmed COVID-19 in Los Angeles County
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed 10 new deaths and 1,030 new cases of COVID-19.
Daily hospitalization numbers continue to steadily decline from the over 2,000 COVID-19 patients hospitalized daily in mid-July to an average of 1,100 patients hospitalized daily this past week. There are 1,089 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized – the lowest since the beginning of May. Thirty-two percent of these people are confirmed cases in the ICU.
To date, Public Health has identified 240,749 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, and a total of 5,769 deaths. Upon further investigation, 41 cases reported earlier were not LA County residents.
Testing results are available for more than 2,282,000 individuals with 10% of all people testing positive.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to all those who are experiencing loss and sorrow associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and my wishes for a complete recovery to those who are sick and hospitalized with COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “It is evident we are making progress, and this is a testament to the collective efforts of so many. As we evaluate how to best continue our recovery journey without experiencing the spikes we saw in July, we need to consider the magnitude of increased exposures created with each sector re-opening. Moving forward, especially in a county as large as ours, requires a thoughtful assessment of what measures are in place to protect residents and employees. Whether we are looking at how to best support school children, or hair salon operators, we have to move forward responsibly since there is no path to economic recovery without slowing the spread of COVID-19. Not respecting the seriousness of the pandemic only makes it harder to open up more of our County.”
The combination of hot weather and a desire for outdoor recreation is driving thousands of people to L.A. County beaches and recreational areas. This is understandable, but any crowded space, even if it’s outdoors, are places where COVID-19 can spread. The best way to be safe while outdoors, is to enjoy our beautiful recreational spaces with the people in your household. Because of the threat of COVID-19 spread, gatherings are not allowed unless specified by Health Officer Orders. This means parties of any type are not allowed anywhere, including at the beach or park.
Of the 10 new deaths reported today, two people that passed away (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena) were over the age of 80 years old, three people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, and one person who died was between the ages of 50 and 64 years old. Five people had underlying health conditions including two people over the age of 80 years old, two people between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, and one person between the ages of 50 and 64 years old.
Ninety-three percent of the people who died from COVID-19 had underlying health conditions. Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 5,429 people (99 percent of the cases reported by Public Health); 51% of deaths occurred among Latino/Latinx residents, 24% among White residents, 15% among Asian residents, 10% among African American/Black residents, less than 1% among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander residents and 1% among residents identifying with other races.
